Storage recommendation(s) in FL/GA solicited

Storage recommendation(s) in FL/GA solicited

Hi, Y'all...

We're about to leave the boat for 3-4 months (mid-March to mid-June/early July) to attend to family business. When we return, we're heading to Maine on the Gulf Stream and other northerly pointings, from somewhere either in FL or GA. At the moment we're in the Miami area.

Our preference would be for ground, secure, storage, but we'd consider in-the-water alongside/out back/in someone's home or condo slip if recommended or owned by one of this group/list.

We have some challenges, in that we're slightly over 6' deep and over 63' tall, so access to some areas (e.g. Indiantown, otherwise attractive) won't happen. We could go on the ground in St. Petersburg (which we know from our 3 year refit and later 4 month rehab - it has some advantages because of our familiarity) for about $300 a month plus hauling. If we were to stay in the water at someone's house or condo's slip (right out back, not remote) where an eye could be cast upon us on a regular basis (visual, from home, not maintenance trips), we'd expect some fraction of that cost.

Any place on or near the coast of FL from St. Pete around to, and, GA, would do. Any personally known (that is, you know personally, rather than speculation) suggestions as to who I might contact to accomplish that? Any "insider" info about any given marina/boatyard which might lend an advantage?

We'll be making the decision in the next week or so, as we'll have to be sailing if it isn't right in this neighborhood, and we don't want schedulitis!

Thanks, as always.

Skip ,Lydia and Portia !
My Tayana is stored on the hard in Palmetto at Snead Island Boat Works Yard . You can't find a better place to leave you boat when you are away .It is reputable boat yard, extremely clean ,security after hours and on the weekends . Dry storage yard is kept separate from the rest ,fenced and gated. The owners can obtain the key to the gate from the office, but no one is allowed there between 5PM and 7 AM week days or weekends. Our price for 42 footer is $295 a month . If you want I can e-mail you the pictures of the yard.
Say hello to Lydia from me.
Regards
Henryk

Ps. But hurry up .We are coming down for a week last week of February and would like to see you again.

Try Green Cove Springs Marina in Green Cove Springs, Florida. Just 20 miles south of Jax on the St. Johns. Or Reynolds Park Yacht Center in Green Cove Springs......

Tiger Point in Fernandina Beach is an excellent yard. Easy access, just use the St. Mary's River entrance. No bridges. I've stored there many times.

Storage Resolved...

Thanks to all who responded on and off list. We checked
extensively on the east coast of FL, and a few on the west coast
(where it was presumed to be cheaper, but the offset was that it
was several hundred miles and many days round trip to get back to
where we started from in Miami). Because of the incremental cost
to go to the west coast, other than a few direct recommendations,
plus the place we'd done our refit and later wreck rehab, we
didn't follow up on most of those. However, I've left the yards
and numbers for those who may find them useful.

We have some issues which others might not, so we've noted that
if they apply:

First, we're deep and tall, 6.5 and 64, respectively. That
limited us on some of our possibilities. Indiantown Marina, a
very frequent referral, was knocked out from that difficulty.

Second, we have overhangs which extend our Coast Guard LOA from
45 to the maker's 46.5 and if you count the davits and dink, well
over 50 feet. Depending on how the yard calculates length, that
could be a significant cost difference.

Finally, we're self-insured, and as yet have not found an
affordable liability-only policy, so we're going bare, there,
too. Some yards require a separate rider issued by the insurance
company listing them as a named insured, and others will just
require us to display the affidavits page. As we have neither,
those requiring same were not possible.

We found that yards have several ways of doing things. Some
(very few) have a flat rate haul/launch/pressure wash, and others
have separate charges per foot for each of those and still others
have per-foot charges but inclusive of all three. As we have a
clean bottom, and I'll dive it before we actually leave Miami, we
won't require pressure washing. The ability to separate those
charges was useful to us.

Some places have a one-time charge separately for blocking,
either by a per-foot charge or a labor rate. Indiantown Marina
requires you to buy their tie-down straps (presuming you can
reuse them on future occasions if you're a repeat customer), and
rent (a substantial number of) jackstands. Our choice uses
cradles which they rent, but placement is included in the
haul/launch fee.

A few yards have flat rate storage, while others have a minimum
rate which could be more for larger boats, but most have straight
per-foot (however, see above about length calculation) charges
with some having add-ons like seasonal tie-downs or ours, with a
cradle rental, as additional monthly costs. A couple, primarily
work yards, have an escalating sliding scale of charges as months
go on, to encourage you to leave rather than take up valuable
space.

Finally, one yard recommended renting dehumidifiers, as well as
shrinkwrapping (due to trees), in the summer, for a a $35 monthly
fee. Shrinkwrapping would add substantially to any short-term
storage, and as many have discovered to their horror, may have
negative implications for the finish on a boat if left for some
time

The winner:

Expect that if your boat is going to sit in the water for four months without moving, you will have a forest grown on the bottom when you come back. Figure you will need a haul and cleaning, or a very willing diver, or the ability to dive on the hull, if you go the in-water storage route. And of course, boats in dry storage sink much less often than those sitting unattended in the water. [g]
