SSB tapped

I just found out that someone "tapped" our SSB and others are listening in on "private" conversations. I'm not sure who is doing this but they must be "sick" individuals, really "sad". I've even had the "feeling" it may be happening on our VHF as well. What's happened to our world and where is all this leading to???

Re: SSB tapped

Unless you're using commo gear that's secure/encrypted, as well as possibly frequency agile, radio's open source. Kind of like a roadside billboard. Anyone & everyone can read (listen) it. Which is one of radio's grand features. Anyone & everyone can tune into any radio station within their broadcast area. For example, tuning in to NPR during the morning commute in your car.

Why would you think VHS, Ham, or SSB to be any different? And how long have you been sailing? Given that if you spend more than 2 min next to a marine radio, it becomes quite obvious that everyone that's broadcasting is doing so in the clear.
It's not a secured, encrypted WiFi network by any means.

"The chat show" at Portishead use to make for some quite entertaining listening for offshore mariners. Especially in the pre-smartphone/pre-sat phone era. As do quite a large percentage of cruiser's nets in various harbors all over the globe.

Re: SSB tapped

I gotta believe someone who uses "Sailor" in his userid and has nearly 5,000 posts on this forum understands that HF and VHF broadcasts can be (and are) monitored by lots of people. Something else is going on here, and the OP should clarify what has him so upset.

Re: SSB tapped

Didn't you notice the two green grinnies (or whatever you call them)? I suspect this is a "hidden" political broadcast.

Re: SSB tapped

Hint: who in the news uses the words "sick" "sad" etc in his tweets constantly and o is paranoid that he is being "tapped"?

Re: SSB tapped

Is a scrambler for SSB and VHF the same thing or does one need two different devices?

Wow, either I read the failing NYT too much or others not getting enough FAKE news. I got it halfway through the first sentence. SAD!

Re: SSB tapped

Apparently there is some new tech out where you can modulate your upper or lower sidebands (cant remember which )with them new- fangled waves coming out of your microwave . I also cant remember this makes your transmissions more or less secure . Maybe one of the more technical minded types here could explain this to me. :-)

Oh yeah, it does keep the bad guys from understanding your transmission, and the good guys too... it all sounds like pop-corn popping.

Actually, I sometimes get the same effect without use of a microwave!

Only happens with the M802 which is why the FCC pulled it's compliance...
very sad
