Spreader Lights! Whatcha think??

I needed to replace my old not working 55w/ea stainless spreader lights while I had my mast down to replace chainplates and standing rigging. I wanted LEDs but did not want to pay the 150-200 or more at least for the ones designated "spreader lights". One day while trolling a local marine store I spotted some underwater LED lights that claimed to be 600lumens for $30 ea, I figured why not. Lets hope they last. They only draw .2 ah, I finally got them wired in and working. Whatcha you think? Got $60 invested

Another place to get led lighting is from large sign companies. When they replace an led sign it has hundreds of led lights. Most sign companies just throw them away. You can use them to wire into exiting light fixtures and interior mood lighting.

Re: Spreader Lights! Whatcha think??

Does it say anything on the packaging about suitability for above water use?
It does not seem to have much heatsinking and I wonder If the design reies on water cooling.

I hooked them to a battery here at the house for an hour....not very hot at all. these units only draw a .25a. I am not saying these are any better than actual spreader LED lights. but let it be known that this was about the only way i was gonna have spreader lights because I was not spending 200 bux on "spreader lights". I also do not intend on sailing with them all on all night. only when the need arises. These are in addition to headlamps the we use on the boat all the time.

I just got them wired in yesterday and intended to get out there last night but there were severe tstorms everywhere around us.....you can see some of the heavy clouds in the pictures

Re: Spreader Lights! Whatcha think??

I think for $30 you can't go wrong. Even if they have a heat problem, you can replace them once a year and still be way ahead of the game for a decade.

Amazon.com: White LED Underwater Light 600L: Sports & Outdoors

Looks like the same light as the Aqua-light with slightly different packaging for $20. The Aqua-light blurb says they are rated for out of water use as well.

Re: Spreader Lights! Whatcha think??

Mike, the 10,000 hour rating tells you they are overdriving the LEDs. LEDs are typically rated for 50,000 hours before they degrade to 50% output, with 100k hours total life.

Might be good enough for gummint work, but this is not a prime quality part if they're consuming the LEDs that quickly. Good enough for many things, but caveat emptor.
