Spinnaker pole keep it?

G'day petrified,

People (as indicated above) do use their poles even if they don't fly a spinnaker. However, as you gain more experience with the boat, there will come a day when the air is light, and you just want to give it a go with the spinnaker. Do this where there is lots of room to run down, blanket it behind the main, and take it down. You need the room till you've practiced more.

As you have given us no details relative to the boat, there's little more to say. If it's over 50', you'll probably want to rig the pole up the mast, 'cause it'll be too long to manage easily by yourself. At 19 ft., ours is mounted up the mast.

My guess: when sailing deep angles and wanting to go "wing and wing" (ie, main out on one side, jib on the other), using the spinnaker pole to hold the clew of the jib out to windward means that you can sail anywhere from dead down wind to nearly a beam reach. Without the pole one is limited to a narrow band of angles, approximately 180 to perhaps 165 degrees apparent.

Some folks use a "whisker pole" instead of a spinny pole. These are usually not as robust in construction and are often collapsible for storage. Sometimes they collapse when in use... The spinny pole won't do that!

I'd sure keep it...

That's where I figured he was going.
I'll keep it then, maybe even bust out the spinnaker and see how big of a mess I can make.
