Spinnaker Care

I had a fantastic afternoon of sailing heading down Buzzards Bay. I had light wind from the northeast dead downwind. I thought it would be a great chance to practice my skills with my standard spinnaker and ATN tacker. The setup and launch went great even single handed with the help of my tiller pilot. The wind piped up to 10+ knots as I passed Mattapoisett. With the pilot in control, I headed to the foredeck to retrieve the sail. Long story short, I dumped it in the water and now it is sopping wet. How do you rinse and dry your spinnaker?Click image for larger version

I think an ATN sock is in the offing!

Re: Spinnaker Care

Tom, it won't dry if its been in salt water, salt is hygroscopic. You need a paddling pool of warm fresh water and possibly some gentle liquid soap to remove the salt first.

We use a sock for our cruising chute, it just makes the whole thing so much easier to control.

Re: Spinnaker Care

Won’t just hosing it down where it is on the flag pole work well enough?

Re: Spinnaker Care

It might, but if you don't get it dry and put it away in a locker, well you know what will happen. A $20 childs paddling pool will look cheap in comparison to a mouldy sail, particularly one dumped in the 'oggin rather than just a few splashes.

Re: Spinnaker Care

It’s pouring rain with no wind today. Now to dry it out. A kiddie pool makes sense. I’ll hoist it with the boat on my mooring and allow it to dry in the sun. Unfortunately it will be raining for a few days!

Re: Spinnaker Care

I've always just hosed spinnakers off, rinsing a few times and then rigging them to billow in the wind to dry out. Never had a problem getting the salt out or getting them to dry. The material is so thin it does not really hold salt and rinses pretty easily.

Re: Spinnaker Care

What I was thinking is that in use, it will pick up quite a bit of salt, you’ll never have it salt free, so maybe just gettin the majority of the salt out is enough? I know my code zero and my white sails have salt on them, and seem to dry well.
My code zero I drop and put in a bag, I don’t leave it up.
