Re: Spinnaker and/or Storm Sails

Impressive, only 4 votes but 50% have storm sails and no spinnaker. Does that mean they sail in heavy weather more often than light wind?

You didn't put a choice for neither, so I can't vote.

I don't have either, either. But I would like a stay sail.

Re: Spinnaker and/or Storm Sails

We always have a storm jib on board. We have a storm trisail too, but only take that on longer trips.
We have 4 spinnakers, but for cruising we don't use them much - its easier and less risky to pole-out a genoa for running downwind.

Re: Spinnaker and/or Storm Sails

A spinnaker, a gennaker, two banniakers, trysail, storm jib.

I am not sure we need all this stuff. I'd rather have a set of new sails designed around the concept of '3-sails boat'.

Re: Spinnaker and/or Storm Sails

Have a storm jib, Asym and regular spinnakers on this boat and the last. Have cruised over 10,000 miles double and single handed and have never used the storm sails. Have used either the Asym or regular spinnaker for only a few hours on long passages. Haven't used the spinnakers a lot more even sailing inshore or just daysailing 'cause the sails are a bit squirrely to handle by myself. Spinnaker socks make them much more cruiser friendly, though. Thinking back on it, didn't really have a lot of opportunity to use a spinnaker as most of the miles were made on a reach where the jibs worked just fine. Did sail DDW most of the way to Hawaii but was making 80% or more of hull speed without any excitement running wing and wing so didn't bother with the spinnaker.

Re: Spinnaker and/or Storm Sails

I have gennaker with sock. No real storm sails, but deep third reef on the main and staysail. Will be added even smaller storm jib to inventory at some point.

Re: Spinnaker and/or Storm Sails

I wonder for the people who have both the spinnaker and storm sails, which they got first.

What's a "small" spinnaker and what use it is?

Large for light wind and small for heavy winds

North offer 3 spinnaker sizes for down wind sailing

North Sails: Downwind Sails
