Spider repellent

I've heard (from one source, so it must be correct) that spiders hate bay leaves. This source used to leave small tea bag type containers filled with bay leaves in the nooks and crannies of his boat and said that this did the trick. Has anyone else heard this? Has anyone had any success with other methods? (Preferably methods that won't kill the dog.)

Hedge apples also called osage oranges work great.

I have used a pellet gun to good effect. As long as your aim is true the dog should be safe.

There's a spray called "Hot Shot" which works very well. I wouldn't spray anywhere the dog could go, though, and you need to spray and GET OUT for awhile, like when you're leaving the boat for a run ashore.

Readily available at Home Depot and, I assume, elsewhere.

Osage orange works very well. Just leave one on a plate inside the boat. They are supposed to work better when they have been taken from the tree after the first frost of the fall.

While all this might tend to repel the spiders and other pests it does not kill the ones you have. It would sure be hard for them to leave once they got on board. Unwilling passengers but passengers just the same. I would worry more about roaches. Remove all cardboard / paper packaging materials before you bring anything aboard as the eggs can last a long time in the packaging. Once they get breeding aboard they are a menace to be rid of. In a tropical environment they can be happier than you can.

Do you just leave the whole orange or do you cut it up? How long do you have to leave it out?

9 out of 10 spiders that drown are intoxicated and don't wear a lifejacket, so alcohol would probably do the trick.

I use starting gas to chase them out of their hiding places. Works great, they come running like the devil was on their tail. Then a can and overboard they go.

Not many roaches up here but we do get relatives. Your words ring true for them as well.
