Touching story... though I am a bit surprised by the scientists remarks about dolphins.
I've seen them traveling, feeding and playing with a variety of whales from Pilots up... have watched them playing with a couple of Boobies sitting on the water.. jumping over them and then disappear only to pop up beside them as if to say 'BOO'... bored looks from the Boobies...
In the Bass Straits I've seen them travelling and feeding/playing with individual and more seals...
Likely the 'keep up' factor came into play and its chosen a base... many do for one reason or other..
