Some yachts are plain ugly and some beautiful, why and does it matter?
I know this is going to annoy Amel owners but IMHO, Amels are ugly...There is something missing in the lines.
Sure they are good sea boats, easy to handle, sail well, safe centre cockpits, built well, not cheap bla di bla, but where is the beauty, where is the love you must feel for your chariot home. (I also feel this about Prouts and Privileges, 60% of all other Cats and Westerlies built before 2000.)
Because I am bored and not going away on my newly acquired (beautiful) yacht this season, hence being on this forum, I am posting this in the full knowledge that:
I will have to register under a new name after this post or leave the board altogether if the abuse is too strong and my thin skin can handle it no more, but what the hell..
But maybe this post will deliver photos of what is beauty in a yacht and what is the back end of a bus and I will understand more.

For some boats, Amels in particular.... They have to be seen in person and in 3D. Sitting at an anchorage or touring one at a boat show, they look quite nice. Pictures don't seem to due them justice.

Personally, I really like the lines of the late 90s Prout 45s. I nearly bought one.

Re: Some yachts are plain ugly and some beautiful, why and does it matter?
Beauty is very much in the eye of the beholder . This also means everyone is entitled to their opinion.
No one can argue that Amels are very practical boats. They are one of the few cruising boats that are suitable for long distance cruising right from the factory.
Some of this practicality has aesthetic consequences. For example: The fake teak decks are nowhere near as pleasing to the eye as the real thing, but I can understand anyone who has gone through the nightmare of getting a teak deck replaced might have a little smile of joy every time they gaze out at the deck if they own an Amel.
There is plenty of truly stunningly beautiful yachts. There are very few with the unique properties of the Amel. Isn't it nice we have a choice?

LOL
You wont like Shannon yachts then....
The Amel is not so bad for a Mono. Solid and safe and spacious. Has elements of Catamaran living.
I kinda like it.

Since you would like the thread to include photos...
You can start by posting a photo of your own boat in the thread, so others may see if it is a beauty or ugly.
However, based on what you wrote to start this thread, I doubt we would agree on much.
As I see it, the Amel SuperMaramu is a distinctive and beautiful boat that has been smartly designed for a purpose (comfortable and safe long distance cruising in blue water by a couple), and by all accounts I have read from Amel owners, it does that extremely well. There is some beauty in that.
The good thing about boat designs, is that there are many, with something to fit the many different tastes of people.

Its a bit like people going to East Sussex. Some prefer Eastbourne to Brighton. Close in proximity but vastly different in nature and appeal. I like both towns for different reasons.
I also like the Shannon 53HPS
Kenomac will be puking right now

Re: Some yachts are plain ugly and some beautiful, why and does it matter?
Well I wanted a Choey Lee 55 or 63
1985 Cheoy Lee 63 Motorsailor Sail New and Used Boats for Sale
because they have pilot houses that you can sit out stormy weather in the dry and watch big ships run you down while sipping nerve juice, but mainly because, to me they are beautiful, for some other unknown reason.
However the ones on sale were too old and too big I decided and opted instead for a basic one off copy made in Holland in steel, pictured, indeed, very similar to my last boat, another copy in steel, of a 42 Nauticat Cutter Sloop, which I also found stunning......
There is something in the lines of a boat that gets to you, car designers know this well. for instance, bizarre but I find the Moody DS range stunning, I see a lot of people don't like them on here...
Brighton and Eastbourne both have ugly marinas, and are equidistance from my home, but Brighton is more beautiful than Eastbourne so I keep my boat there...

Wash your mouth out!
You must be real bored to try and start a fight...... I find Eastbourne charming and quaint. It has an old world beauty. Brighton is bright and bumptious..... but not more 'beautiful'........
I had a clinic in Eastbourne and lived close to the Sussex Downs...... Brighton does not compare. But I like Brighton for other reasons.
Personal choice in everything.

Gary,
All the guy did was re-invent the 1970's Gulf Sailmaster (pictured). Save yourself a million bucks and buy a Sailmaster instead. Actually, the Sailmaster looks OK... even quite nice in person if you like retro, whereas the Shannon is just plain fugly anyway you look at it.

I think the Amel is a decent looking boat too, not beautiful like a classic yacht, but still an attractive boat. All the practical design features make it more so in the eyes of an engineer.
To borrow a line from Jimmy Buffet...sorta of like a smart woman in a short skirt...way sexier than a bimbo.
