Some yachts are plain ugly and some beautiful, why and does it matter?

Ok, I'll bite. Berkeley was mentioned in a previous post, so here are a couple of photos of my Crealock 37 berthed there. I think she is beautiful though quite small compared to the yachts already mentioned.

Here's the way one of the many Amels look anchored near us. To me it's mind boggling to try to understand how someone can think this Amel 54 is ugly, yet at the same time find beauty in a Shannon 54DS. It doesn't seem possible?

I would NEVER have singled out the Amel as any different from the whole gendre of motor sailer looking vessels..........

I quite like it.... but then there is little that I buy for looks alone, it must have functionality. I find beauty in purpose.

Here's a pic of the Shannon 54DS... the boat that put the company into bankruptcy... again. Looks like it's made out of Legos, nothing rounded off on the entire boat. About as sleek and aerodynamic as a brick.

To my eye, that boat has a nice shape (in and out of the water).

Ok, I cannot resist this one. We are currently in Fiji on our 36' Herreshoff Nereia Ketch. Totally old school, traditional, and gets comments everywhere we go. And, she sails like a dream. I would not own a boat that is not beautiful to me. L.Francis had two comments on yacht design I remember:
The first was that if a design is beautiful, the boatbuilders / craftsmen will take the time to do a better job building the boat.
The second one says that if, as you row away in your dinghy and you look at your boat, she doesn't cause you to smile, then it is the wrong boat for you.
I smile every time....

Ever seen a Coronado 32 or 35?

You'll love the looks of the Amel after that.

The age old question is: Form vs. Function.

I prefer form but only satisfied it with sailing a Sigma 38 or a Folkboat which has both. My old Mariner 35 was close but was just a little bit clunky to satisfy the form completely.

As weavis said they all look like monohulls and beauty is always in the eye of the beholder.

to me that video of the Shannon showed many practical aspects to make it practical and safe for liveaboad sailing.

Starting at the stern it had many features of a catamaran.

When there are so many truly ugly boats around, why in the world complain about an Amel? In my opinion the Amel is a good looking boat
