Re: Somali Coast - Stay Away

This is the history I'm most familiar with having studied it while aboard the USS Bainbridge.
Tripolitan War, 1801 - 1805
For those who are wanting to know a bit about pirate history.
The Somali pirates are no less cunning or technologically advanced as their leaders who are millionaires living ashore. The pirates are just a lot more desparate with no other employment options. My opinion.
kind regards,

Re: Somali Coast - Stay Away

having a parallel thread",thought id get a viable solution in before it is closed.

solution to problem is simple...... switch off the gps in the indian ocean, 9 out of 10 cruisers cant navigate with out it,so would never leave port,

would be surprised if 1 in a 100 pirates could navigate with out gps, even if they had access to almanacks.

some times a gentle tap is better than a giant sledghammer.

peace through lateral thinking........

A world without risk is a world where we might as well live underground in bomb shelters. Taking risks here and there is what makes life worth living. Think about all the risks you take even on a daily basis to make your life better.

It's all about how well you manage the risks you take, not whether or not to take a risk.

What percent of yachts that transit the Malacca Strait get pirated? It may still be worth taking that risk in order to have the gains achieved.

My understanding is you can stay for 72 hrs for a modest mooring fee {about $4 a day} .If you wish to cruise the islands it will cost you around $1000 for 30 day cruising permit.

Re: Somali Coast - Stay Away

M & I have always believed that when we sail away (16 months and counting!) we will get as far as Muscat, then decide whether to turn left, right or go straight. Now it seems the only safe option is to turn left and head for the Far East via Pakistan and India.

But is that option safe? If you take away the tankers from the piracy stats, then I believe there are, sadly, as many attacks on small yachts off Thailand and Philippines. It is hard to syphon the figures. But Somalian attacks currently seem to receive more press attention than attacks elsewhere.

I'm not suggesting it is safe to sail anywhere in the Indian Ocean (not just near Somalia - the circle is widening) but for those of us who wish to live the dream it's gong to be almost impossible to avoid.

Well, actually China has had a couple of warships doing escort duty off Somalia for the past year or so. Might not have made the headlines in US of A though.

Turning off GPS in the area I guess is what makes sense, only problem with that, GPS isn't the only Satellite navigation system out there, Russia also has GLOSNASS, which isn't as good as GPS from my understanding of it, but it's good enough to make do, while it might be in Russia's interest to do the same I'm not sure how you would get them to agree to put their system down in that part of the world.

I'm really pleased to hear China has a few war ships in the region, if every country that has merchant marine vessels regularly, put two ships / patrol boats in the region the problem could likely be brought under control.

Yes tom,

plenty of restrictions and $1000 for 30 days is one of the highest crusing costs around. $1000 for 60 days would be better.

Hope I have passed the mods critea and scrutiny on this post.

Cheers John.

Have a safe and enjoyable passage.
