I would imagine that depends on how much righting moment you build into the craft, how rugged you make the rig and the sea state...and plain dumb luck.


That would make an interesting annual competition. The only rules are a limited budget and a limited LOA. ($5000 and four feet?) This would mean almost anyone could enter the race.

Some will probably sink, others swallowed and some will sail off the end of the Earth never to be seen again...but some are bound to cross the finish line on the other side of the big pond.

People could write programs that use artificial intelligence to navigate the boat the fastest to the finish line. It would make an interesting college competition with all the different technologies that would go into making a boat.

An event sponsor could provide prize money.

Call it the Autonomous Cup. (Sorry, but for this sailing event the huge egos would have to be left on the beach.)
