HI all im looking to buy a yacht in the u,s next year and sail her back to the u.k single handed, does anybody out there know of any extra purchase tax there might be added , im prepaired to upgrade the standing, and running rigging as im going to do a disabled, single handed non stop unassisted world circumnavigation, starting from swansea wales and ending at swansea wales, im doing this to raise funds for the royal british legion and help for heroes, so if you see a very red yacht in the great lakes early next year,with a big welsh dragon flag on her please give me a shout on the radio, my refit should be finished and the ice gone, then im off and away, regards all tony .

Hi Tony,

Hi Tony, by disabled, do you mean you yourself are disabled? If so, what is your disability?

ok from the top,
when i was a serving solier my job included looking for what is known now as ,ie,d's i found thirteen of them and the last of them exploded and , here goes,
high and low bi-lateral noise induced deafness at around 30%
four discs damaged high and lower spine,
a foot of my sigmoid colon removed,
diverticulitus in stomach,
artritus both hands and right knee and progressing elsewhere,
reocurring goute both feet and right knee,
diabetus type two and nearve damage to nerve endings both feet.
thiriod problems,
plus ongoing problems with my stomach pacing up due to medecation,
apart from this im perfect

well will keep you all updated so ive just had a quote for the new standing and running rigging riggin for $ 5.200 fitted which i think is good so hope fully will be flying out after my sons wedding in cyprus and spendintwo months the on a refit, and then ill bring her back to wales ready for the off in late july next year , regards to all tony

well the last but one delivery had the mast over the side outside horta, falling off a fourteen foot wavt , slapped my jaw shut and broke a molar , spent three hors undergoing rppt canal work in italy, a rope rolled under my foot on amates boat in gib and went over the side ,but we had been drinking, my mate shouted man overboard and then the idiot jumped in stright on top of me driving me back down into the water, after which he started fighting with another skipper, he shortened the safety rope on the throwing coming across the atlantic , it made a neat pattern ????????????? mad as a hatter,

Tremendous respect for your endeavour and your personal sacrifice but this plan strikes me as a little overambitious?

Would it not make more sense to buy a boat in the UK, get sailing like mad, take longer and longer journeys in worse and worse weather, so that you know you are prepared for problems which you will undoubtedly have?

I don't know you nor your sailing background, of course.

Well as tough as this seems, it doesn't seem any tougher than dealing with the IED's - not that I have any experience of IEDs (and I am hoping to keep it that way).

On the boat thing, sounds like you have a specific vessel already lined up in the US? If so, can you share the details (just out of nosiness!).

Seems like you have some seatime, so understand that what you are proposing is one helluva challenge - even for a fully crewed vessel. Best of luck and keep us updated

In regard to UK boat taxes, those only apply if you import the boat into the UK - and given it sounds like pretty much most of the refit / fitout will be done in the US and therefore she likely will be "good to go" after she arrives in Swansea - then I would try and avoid importing her into the UK by the simple expediant of not being there long enough for anyone to send you a bill . Of course officialdom could have other ideas .....so might be worth nailing down how you could avoid that complication, even if perhaps simply by the boat being owned by a Non EU / UK national.

What happens when the boat returns to Swansea after going RTW being one for later......
