Should We Move to Florida or Southern California ?

Okay , I posted this question on another forum. The many answers have helped us greatly - and have helped us potentially check out new areas while dropping others off the list.Because I like this forum more- I used the other as a test shot. Basically The overall trend seemed to lean heavily towards Florida -though which part seemed to be in dispute.

Here is our situation:
I would like all suggestions and opinions on plusses and minuses of both areas in regards to possible relocation.
I am married and have 3 kids ages 6-11

We own a successful buisness in Las Vegas but dont have to be here full time . We have been here 10 years (originally NJ) and need a change + dont want to raise kids here any more. I own a Catalina 350 which is in San Diego(fin keel 6' 8" draft would sell it if we went to Florida). I love sailing and fishing equally. Though I love San diego and the boat is there ,which would make it a logical move- there are some things which Kind of annoy me in Cali- the traffic,The showy mentality, water not warm enough(for me), limited sailing destinations, state income tax . Being that I love warm locations - we have pretty much narrowed it down to San Diego/Orange County or South Florida for our next move. (sorry no pac nw comments please)
We want to stay in the US . The boys are heavily into baseball. My wife is great at meeting people (me not so much).

From what I am seeing on S Fla so far:
plusses:
more tropical climate
better sailing destinations
no state tax
could possible have a sailboat and fishing boat docked in my backyard
great year round fishing

minuses-
bugs
humidity
more rain
hurricanes
higher property tax
higher insurance for boats and houses

As far as So Cal:
plusses-
great temperate weather
good surfing /fishing

minuses-
property values in good school areas still too high
general Keeping up with the Joneses mentality
water cold
lack of destinations
kelp everywhere
state income tax
state may be bankrupt.
traffic sux
may gray june gloom

We are looking for a place to raise the kids on or very close to the water.
we need great school area. I would like great sailing destinations and fishing destinations (mainly saltwater inshore and offshore). Somewhat affordable.
We will eventually have a mid 40's Catamaran and a 30 ft- ish sport fisherman. Extremely important is a good "atmosphere" for raising family with a sense of "Community"

Please submit you thoughts , opinions and experiances. Please feel free to point out areas that we may have overlooked or not considered.

I know there is not a perfect place. there are always drawbacks from any area.

thank you

I would recommend the Sunshine Coast of Australia. Brisbane and points north would be perfect for you. If I was 40 years old, I would immigrate to OZ and live in Queensland.

Reference Florida minuses "higher insurance for boats and houses"; many insurers have left the State and there are areas where it is very difficult (read expensive) to get insurance.

We have been on Florida's west coast for + 15 years. Love it. Yes it is buggy in the summer, yes we have hurricanes. We get a heck of a lot more warning about hurricases than Cali does about eartquakes, or Hawaii about eruptions. Excellent schools from St Pete on south. Wilderness from Naples to the keys. Come look.

I grew up and learned to sail in Ft. Lauderdale in the fifties and sixties. It was a different time.- the area from Palm Beach to Miami depresses me now. We're on the St. Johns River at Fleming Island (Orange Park) when we're not cruising. Do a quick internet search re: schools, economy, housing, hurricane protection, available Fleming Island slips , etc. at, Clay County. Florida. 'take care and joy, Aythya crew

I moved six times in Florida and ranged from the keys to the pan handle. Your minuses are accurate, but the question is do they outweigh the positives. The baseball in Florida is excellent with year round playing capabilities. I think that Florida is certainly an option that you should consider heavily.

Have you been to the southeast in the summer? Very, very different than S. Cal.! You have humidity on your list, but have you experienced it? Hard on land but not so bad as long as you are on the water...

How can you tell someone is clueless about California? He calls it "Cali."

If you look closer it says S. Cal. with an !
Been there plenty.
Also totally understand the difficult mentality of the breed, there, like, dude. The one that he speaks of. Just wanted to point out that the climate of Fl can be considered kind of opressive with it's humidity when compared to the sout west.

Not sure why you assumed I was addressing my post to you Conrad - I wasn't. Please see posts #1 and 6.

"cali"

Going back to Cali- Tao Jones?
Nah I dont think so.

Anyways. I have my boat in San Diego, Have a real estate license in "Cali" ,know tons of people there . I am there all the time - mainly San Diego and Orange county. So I think I know somewhat the deal there.

I do love most of the weather. Hate the Kelp- except when fishing for Tuna- then I love the kelp. Anyway I was just abbreviating.

And as for that comment -I thought you were supposed to be the moderator or something. Thanks for your insight. It really helped us out.

I would expect a comment like that from some one else other than a moderator.

Ok back to Florida in the Summer. I am in las Vegas in the Summer. I have not been to Florida in the summer but will go there this year. Expect it the same as vegas. 110 and no humidity or 95 and 90 % humidity.

thanks

I actually maintain homes in Southern California and Las Vegas, myself, as well as a co-owned property in the Colorado Rockies, but inasmuch as "Cali" is a city in Colombia that I've never visited (perhaps you have), I can't "go back to Cali," can I, Andy?
