The "kept in water" idea makes sense.

It makes sense for some things anyway. Celery does well that way.

Plastic is the sworn enemy of much food, oddly enough given how much is wrapped in it. Many vegetables do better kept dry and plastic causes them to sweat. Paper is better for potatoes and onions for instance and many things will last longer without any container rather then in a plastic bag.

In some instances organic may keep better then otherwise. If you've ever worked in the apple industry this may ring a bell. Many apple varieties have a natural wax that preserves them but because of the heavy use of pesticides in most commercial operations they are washed to remove the pesticides then waxed with a vegetable wax for storage.

I've noticed that cheese usually keeps better in waxed paper then in plastic.

$500 a month is plenty of you're a DIY kind of person especially if you're handy and know how to trade/barter. The only major expense(besides customs/international fees) is hauling her out every 5-10 years.....

I've had similar experiences working on my cars. Disassemble part of the vehicle only to discover that I'm in over my head. Twice I've had to have the car/van towed to a garage to finish the job. Cost me more than if I'd had it done professionally from the git-go.

I try to be realistic about my limitations and the consequences of substandard work.

I had three thru-hulls to fill in. I'd never seen it done except on a youtube video, and was afraid that if I did it incorrectly the patch could be punched back out during a collision with a floating obstruction or the like. I figured that the three hundred dollars would give me peace of mind.

I have two more thru-hulls to fill and will probably pay another couple hundred dollars. The projects with less disaster potential like cap rail replacement I will do.

I guess my point is that sometimes the cheapest route (do it yourself) can often turn out to be the expensive alternative.

for the fiberglass mix mix in the short and long hairs for strength and use plastic bags for the shape or flatness, give it a few minutes to cure, take it off let it dry all the way it is perfect with little sanding to do.

Not sure what part of the world you're in, but I just ran my last month's food bill, and I came to $158.00. I live up where all our food gets trucked in from elsewhere (northern Alberta). I've done it as low as $98.00 and never, ever go over $200.00, and that is only if the kids come for a dinner or two. I'm not a small guy (6'4").

Maybe it is much more expensive where you are, but I like to eat also, and eat well. I don't buy any processed food except margarine and mustard, bake my own bread, use spices to create taste and variety, and don't feel I miss out on anything. It's choices and changing how you do things... plus it is healthier, or so my doc said when he looked at my last blood results
