Bit hard to tell (from size of the photo) but there does seem to be some order to the arrangement. and given that not spread onto the pontoon (and also nothing that looks odd, like a rusty bicycle or a washing machine ) maybe it is a temporary thing - possibly to dry the boat out?

No, he was just an old fella with a hoarding obsession. I think you spotted the shopping trolley, but he did have two bicycles under a tarp on the pontoon out of the photo frame. He rode past me a couple of times but he was not the conversational type.

Under those conditions a simple question like, "How's it going?" can be very difficult to answer I suspect.

if i ever come in situation to be "shoestring sailor" i would burn my bot and never set my foot on the beach again let alone in the boat.

Turns out that most people who claim this don't include long term expenses.

Just maintaining a US passport works out to a dollar a month over ten years, now work out the things on the vessel that actually see use.

Several have shown how they squeak in around $500 a month, but I have yet to see a plausible budget significantly under.

In the UK I know of many places where you can moor for free, ok its usually pretty far up the river and usually dries out but I know of places really quite close to civilisation (5 to 10 mins walk to the shops) some in quite nice areas.

Not to refridgerate and to pick over daily with lettuce etc don't cut it but take the leaves from the outside working in.
Voyaging On A Small Income by Annie Hill is a must read for anyone considering cruising on a small budget, it is written by Annie who has sailed across the Atlantic with her husband many times (at least 9) and has gone up as far as the artic circle, visited Spain, the Balerics, Greenland, Bermuda, Cuba, Venezuela to name just a few and mostly in a 34' plywood junk rigged schooner they built themselves. One chapter is called How to Eat Like A King When You Haven't Got A Bean. There are useful appendices including (a1)how to store food, (a2) how to store fruit, (a3) how to store vegetables this runs to 14 pages and covers most of the fruit and veg I have heard of and many I haven't.
