Re: Shoestring Sailors (Cruising on $500 per month - part II)

ok you want some costs.

my mizzen gooseneck was trash--toast, cracked thoroughly. we removed it .

we went walkabout thru parts of zihuatenejo solely for repair of automobiles and trucks and welding stuff. near auto zone.

for 5 pesos per weld, we had the broken toasted one repaired with 100 pesos only to pay. THAT IS LESS THAN 10 usd for this repair that would-a been not done in usa as they wanna make anew part or sell ye one. awesomest evaahhh braising job. peso is 12.5 to one dollar us. i win. all my repairs have been this way. i intelligently search fro the best evah repair soul and make the boat work using minimal dollars and not within usa borders.

Twenty welds on one gooseneck makes me think it may well turn back into toast the first time it is stressed.

Repairs can often be more time consuming outside of the USA, but a lot cheaper. In Honduras on Guanaja I had a toasted alternator so I took it into the fishing boat shop, and he said he couldn't rebuild it, but he could have it done overnight and I would have it back the next day. Put it on a plane to the mainland, rebuilt overnight, flown back the next morning, total charge $50.

Well remove the SF bay and Delta and there is a real lack of nice anchorages in gunk hole range in California. The delta has oh 500 ish miles of places to anchor, though not all areas are deep enough for a sailboat. Still it offers some of the nicest places to drop the hook.

Would love to be back on the east coast. Being from southern Georiga I can speak southern real well, though luckily eye don't haf tuw. Odds are if I want to get there, I'll need to head south a bit and hang a left or right. Still pondering that.

Well moved the boat 20 miles today, so a lovely if slightly cool day

why do you remove mexico from the west coast cruising grounds-isnt usa, but no one on a fixed income can manage in usa at usa pricing.
there are many places to cruise in mexico and each place is entirely different from the others.
is a shame to rule it out for any reason.

Well I did not rule out mexico. I've been pondering cruising down to mexico for a few years now. But lets just call it jitters, what with those long stretches along baja's coast worry me. Once down to cabo and around to the sea, life would be pretty good. Me I would avoid cabo as it looks a wee bit too busy for me.

The discussion from kettlewell, was about the number of anchorages on the east coast. Compared to the east coast, the west coast has some pretty long days between any anchorages that for the most part are just road steads with some protection from the wind.

boat was a salvage job!

fortunatly the owner was around so we were able to establish clear title with a bill of sale for a dollar, after he had abandoned it.

we were also able to salvage , dry out and return a lot of the po's personal stuff that would otherwise have been lost
