People on welfare from from other countries seem to be able to get the max out of the DSS (Department of Social Security).

Re: Shoestring Sailors (Cruising on $500 per month - part II)

While southern cali is expensive, I've found that it is possible to live in northern cali, pretty inexpensively. Of course it requires that one knows where to shop and where to stay. It could easily cost 2-3 times what I spend just by staying at a nice marina here and shopping at the higher end stores.

Though for $1000 per month you would be ok for sure. $500 is possible too, (I can just get to that so its doable), though I think its getting harder as food and fuel prices rise.

So is crack a lot cheaper in Mexico? - save me a spot in the anchorage - just figured out how to make ends meet...

No man do not ever boil okra! I am from Bama we fry everything, I know, but that is the only way. Use corn starch not flour, some pepper, salt and cayenne and you are in heaven... don't forget the beer!

Just solved my last major expense. As a 45-year smoker with a 60-a-day habit it looked as if cruising was going to depend on where I could buy cigarettes cheapest. In Australia it was costing me $30.00 a day.

About two weeks ago I decided to tackle the issue and bought an electronic cigarette and a bunch of other stuff. Made a few of the usual beginner mistakes by buying something that looked like an actual cigarette the first few times - they don't hold enough current and only work for a very short time before needing to be recharged.

Cost of smoking is now down to $1.50 a day all inclusive and I've accumulated enough stuff to last me the next year. The downside is that I'll always have a battery on charge, but that's only 2.5 watt-hours.

If anyone wants further details or equipment suggestions feel free to ask. But they do work, anything that could get me to stop smoking has to be miraculous. And when you look at the figures above, I more than paid for my cruising budget in giving them up.

See you in a month or 2 .

Actually well worth ploughing through (despite the occasional sidetracks!) and the repetitive themes are useful, if only for the questions to ask of self (if folks had come up with all the answers for everyone the threads would be a lot shorter ).

Re: Shoestring Sailors (Cruising on $500 per month - part II)

Here's a shoestring idea I love and take advantage of.

Last week there was a nauticle flea market in Bradenton Florida. Went down there and got a 3/4 Marelon sea cock (brand new) and 5 or 6 3/4 brass fittings (brand new) 25 ft of galvanized 5/16 chain (Slightly used) all for less than 40 dollars.
Gotta love a good deal at a flea market and there are more coming up.
