Shipping an Anchor

I recently purchased a 20kg Bruce anchor from the Cruisers Forum classifieds. It happened that there were two of them for sale at the same time and none of us were sure how to ship an anchor. Well, for those of you who want to ship an anchor, ours arrived via UPS today looking just like it does in the picture. No packaging required. Shipping cost was $68 from Texas to Montana.

I bought a Manson Supreme from West Marine and it arrived with postage stickers on it from USPS. No packaging!!!

Seems to me that packageing would be a bit much for an anchor! No reason to wrap one ! your gonna toss it in the wter and mud anyway!! Just sayin if it will ship that cheap why would ya want to package it ???

Totally agree. I'm not worried about damage to a large hunk of galvanized metal. I was surprised that USPS would ship it "naked". Sometimes their rules seem very picky.

One thing nice about a Mantus is that it comes apart and can ship in a flat box. The main reason I don't like shipping an anchor naked is that it is likely to get dragged and dropped, and you could well end up with some gouges in the galvanizing.

Fortress anchors come disassembled and ship easily too--even some quite large ones.

Pray tell, why do you need such a robust anchor in Montana? Flathead Lake? The North Fork? Ice-boating?

Just noticed that I missed this reply a while back so thought I would respond.

We sail on Flathead Lake in western Montana and probably spend around 40 nights at anchor each summer. While it's not the ocean or even a "great lake", we get some pretty violent weather at times. We recently bought a Cabo Rico 34 that we are beginning to outfit for extended water sailing">blue water sailing in retirement. We have a prioritized list that has good ground tackle as a top priority. After purchasing a number of items this year I got to thinking how foolish it would be to risk our "retirement home" by using substandard ground tackle. So, not only is there a 20kg Bruce on the bow, but also a 20kg Spade S100 right beside it.

No wonder glass stuff gets broken when you try to ship it!

It's not so much the anchors, as everything else that has to ship!

Yep.

I got one shipped UPS but they wrapped it in heavy plastic and tape.

Funny thing about UPS, if you ASK them, they will say they don't take anything unless it is in a corrugated cardboard box.

But their policies and their rates also vary quite a bit depending on whether you have a commercial account with them.

Ah, we used to live north of Whitefish so I was wondering. I remember that Flathead Lake is the largest fresh water lake west of the Mississippi. ANd I remember the winds there as well.
When you get the Cabo Rico into bigger water come visit us ... we are moving next month from St Augustine to Sanibel Island, Florida.

Hoppy sailor, you are doing the right thing. If you are ever going to live on the hook, a big anchor is the first requirement. If I knew how to do those little dittys after my name, I would say something like, REMEMBER! MORE CRUISING BOATS ARE LOST TO POOR ANCHORING SKILLS THAN ARE EVER LOST TO POOR SAILING SKILLS. Just my 2 cents worth repeated over and over again._____Grant.

Should I remove the clear bubble stuff on my anchor? Pretty sure it came ready to use. Nothing about removing the bubble protection in the hand book.
Seems like it has better surface area with the clear bubble stuff. It's easier to clean with fresh clear bubble stuff wrapped about it. Everyone looks at my anchor when i am docked. They seem pleased when they see it they are all smiley, giggling while they point at my new anchor.
