Sheets In or Out?
Hi there, as a general rule, if there is such a thing lol.... Would the sheets for a furling jib go inside or outside the shrouds? My boat is a 23' Dolphin and I am new to sailing. Thank you

Re: Sheets In or Out?
It depends...
If the genoa is furled to less than 110% J you may be better of inside sheeting, especially if you have an inside car track.
If the genoa is 110%-150% you will be sheeting outside.
Lead angles matter.

Re: Sheets In or Out?
Ex California nailed it. Depends on the size of the sail and what the lead and shape of the sails dictates bur it will usually be outside for an overlapping sail.

Re: Sheets In or Out?
My genoa goes outside the shrouds, and my inner jib goes inside the shrouds.
Like Dan said! +2

Re: Sheets In or Out?
Ditto Ex-Calif. It depends on the boat's/sails' configuration and sheet block locations.

Re: Sheets In or Out?
Just to clarify, as per the OP referring to a jib, I usually class a jib as a foresail that doesn't come aft if the mast. After that it's a genoa. If it is in fact a genoa like the one pictured below, it will definitely have to run outside (it probably is as it's a masthead rig)

Re: Sheets In or Out?
In between of course!
Bristol 22 with it's lapper that sheets outside the lower and inside the upper, that is if you want to point decently.
There's also a storm jib track on the cabin house that sheets inside of everything. A 150 genoa was added post factory, it had to sheet outside. Boat tacked through 120-130 degrees with the outboard shrouds and long spreaders.

I considered that and yes, I would agree with your first post - inside.
But as he OP said new to sailing and didn't know whether to sheet inside or outside I made a leap and decided he may not know the difference between and jib and genoa...
Hope we hear back from the OP...
