Seraffyn in Mattapoisett

Avid sailors already know that Seraffyn, a 24 1/2’ Lyle Hess-designed sloop patterned after an English channel cutter, was home-built by Lin and Larry Pardey in the late 1960s. The Pardeys sailed her around the world, and later published a series of popular books of their adventures aboard Seraffyn.

And now here she was, not 2 miles from my house in Mattapoisett! Peterson, the owner of The Wooden Tangent, gave me a tour of Serafynn

Hope it eventually ends up in the Smithsonian Museum or something nautically similar.

A nautical oddity place more likely. Now we know that a couple needs a minimum 40' mono or 50' multi with all the electronics to sail RTW, or really, just to weekend as well. Where would you put the forward-looking sonar on what is essentially a liferaft for a proper yacht?

But how true.
The Pardeys, and many, many others, wanted to get away, see the world, and experience life on the sea. Their plan did not envision that the means to do so should also be equipped to replicate their shore life.

It is a truly awesome boat that is a key part of an impressive story; and I am glad to read that it is in good - and appreciative - hands. Thanks for this post.

Those were different daze! Modern technology has essentially spoiled the modern sailor.
