Seeking sound advise

Hi ye' all,

We just bought a boat in P.V. Mexico (not Mexican registered) and are planning to sail her from there soon.
We are now in the process of registering her under her new name and ownership.
The broker told us that we have to sail her out of P.V. on a "trip to nowhere", change her name while out at sea and re-enter in Mazatlan as though we have just arrived.
For some strange reason this seems like fishy advise (or the way to do it) to us.
Does someone here have any experience/knowledge on how and what we should do?

Thanks in advance!
Ron

Re: Seeking sound advise

To me it sounds like they are trying to erase a ownership trail. Hoping that boat will be brought in under new name and it's past forgotten. Are you sure this was not stolen boat you bought?

What has been government response to your filling new registration papers?

This might be the time to use the old axiom, "When in Rome , do as the ..." What about a second opinion locally, Are you in Peurto Vallarta? Are there brokers that might provide a second opinion? ....other experienced owners? I don't have any help or real advice,- good luck!

Re: Seeking sound advise

She is definitely not stolen and all papers are in order.
I was told this is the way to avoid paying a local tax (which I don't understand as well - Why pay tax if the boat and owner are not Mexican?).
I have not gone to the government yet.
Waiting for some more input.

Re: Seeking sound advise

And you would consider this advice to try to avoid paying taxes in a Latin American country, why? So you could take advantage of the free government paid vacation at one of the Mexican prison hospitality suites?
