If it were me I'd head for Monterey Bay, either Santa Cruz, Moss Landing or Monterey then get some repairs done and then beat for SF.

Arthur Ashe is dead and wasn't all that great a player. Certainly not a Nastase.

I don't swallow that romantic dribble. You either get there or you're wasting time. Maybe that's why I'm looking a Jeanneaus and race boats these dayz.

Me? Milking cash cows so I can get me a real nicey nice boat instead of crap! And I love it! YAY FOR SALTYMONKEY! thats me!

As of 6:52PM Rimas was 42 NM from the GG bridge. He can't get in. Hope he keeps a sharp eye out tonight. Lots of ships out there. Good Luck Rimas!

I wonder when provisions, or lack thereof, will be a factor? It seems like the turn west is just to buy some time and plan an alternative destination.

Re: Search for 24-foot sailboat off Hilo Hawaii (Merged)

I just noticed that he's posted some messages in the trip log on the DeLorme tracking site. Light winds or calm, and no engine. The tracker shows him to be a few miles SW of the Farallons and headed west at about 3 kts.

Here what he posted yesterday and the day before...

Re: Search for 24-foot sailboat off Hilo Hawaii (Merged)

As someone else said earlier I too have sailed on a San Juan 24. They are decent lightish weight race that would be a PITA offshore. Thin hulled and I have to imagine there would be a considerable amount of flex pounding around in and offshore storm. I also wouldn't want to rely on a rig that was built just a little over strong enough for dayracing offshore... I've nothing against small boats and there are plenty that are well suited for offshore passages. This however isn't one of them.

Again yes the fact that none or 1 has every done long range cruising/ circumnavigating on this model of boat does speak to its design worthiness for this use. That doesn't mean he won't make it I just question why he would choose yet anohter SJ24 after wrecking the first! Also why wouldn't you want a windvane! You could easily double your mileage in a day. Alot of this leaves me asking why, but ohwell.

At least he's out there giving it a try, I wouldn't support him in his poor decisions though. I've got enough of my own to feed Especially as it sounds like he is asking for donations and with that the limited budget for the serious amount of upgrades needed for a boat like this. Hopefully he makes it and is able to make some changes ect.

Because it was donated. Because he's poor as a church mouse.

For someone wanting to circumnavigate, he's going the wrong direction for all the wrong excuses.

A little northing and it is the right direction to be getting out of the shipping lanes "behind" the Farallons.

Hope he can time his entry right. Best of luck to him. Just saw high tide is 1636. He might just make it. Hope so.
