Re: Search for 24-foot sailboat off Hilo Hawaii (Merged)

The trick to get a boat beam-reaching with the tiller lashed is to set the headsail up to leeward (ie same side as main), with the clew immobilised (ie on a long whisker pole), strapped flat, and "board out" the main similarly, and (key proviso) harden the preventer on the main boom so the main clew is also immobilised relative to the boat. The main should have substantially less angle of attack than the headsl.

Some boats may need a small staysail, maybe sheeted slightly aback, with a sheet to the tiller, but a decently balanced boat should not need this. If a swing keel is present it can be swung aft, (or aft daggerboard(s) dropped), to improve balance if it's breezy.

Ronald Simpson going West to Hilo in a 27 footer from San Diego and Rimas in his SJ going East to SF from Hilo are getting close to passing each other. 504nm apart this morning.

Last night a little closer, 420nm. It would be quite a a quink if they passed close enough to hail!. I would love to be there. I young, experienced and well prepared guy in a well prepared boat and Rimas. I wonder what the conversation would be.

The typical track from Hawaii to the mainland takes you nowhere near the track for a boat sailing to Hawaii. One of them is needlessly fighting reality and the elements if they are that close together. At least that's the case unless the high quite far north and Rimas is sailing under it instead of over it.

What's Simpson sailing to Hawaii for at this time of year?? The single handed TransPac doesn't leave till June

Back in San Diego after an incredible five weeks in Australia. Sydney- Hobart was a great experience, I traveled a beautiful country, spent a lot of time surfing and met some really great people... canít really say anything better about Australia. The place was amazing! So amazing, in fact, that I am now planning to sail my boat/ house MONGO, (previously Sirena Gorda) from California to Australia! I want to travel Australia and the South Pacific by sail, pursue more offshore racing opportunities in Australia and sail in another Sydney- Hobart!

Rimas lost his main, at least he says he can't use it and only has a storm jib. then later in the day he found the old main so he has it up now. At the rate he is going, he will make it by May, maybe. He does have an outboard, but not enough fuel for much more than a few miles. Simpson has no engine.

Ravinracin,
Thank you for keeping the updates coming. I hope the old main is sturdy.

A quote from Rimas yesterday morning, this was Thursday 3/20/14, "Good morning to everyone on Monday coming gale will be dangerous no life raft it is adventure on the ocean every minute is dangerous". Is he looking forward to the coming gale? He has been heading south and east since then. It is going to be hard for him to get north enough to make SF.

Along with these snippets of information, does he post his lattitude/longitude? As Roverhi says most sailing folks head north and make a large hook around the mid-pacific high then head south a little to SF. Have you been able to track his course?

146nm in the last 8 days. He is sailing but which way must depend on the easiest way to go. He seems to be wandering n to s to n to s with just a little easting. I think he will make it, but it will be a while. 473 nm to go.

He's at about 33.5N 131W right now, and seems to have got himself stuck under a High. Looks like the winds will build and clock west and NW for him as the front associated with the Low to his northwest approaches.

Thanks. I didn't know that was a possibility.

I certainly hope he has enough freshwater or a small watermaker aboard. Looks as if he'll be out there for quite some time.
