I had thought of making an oarlock that would fit into the top of a standard winch. Already sturdy mount, usually high enough to clear obstructions. Low friction. Some sort of locking mechanism needed would be complicated.

I think the key to practicality here is low freeboard and height of winch off the water, otherwise oars need to be long, too long. Also of course you need to have room for a full reach fore and aft. My set-up here would not really work for the Catalina 27 or Luders 30 and certainly not the Rawson 30 in the next slips over.

Just tried out the Gaco rowlocks. Rather Nice, very slippery, even I could probably be happy with oiled leathers over the oars. Felt sturdy. They were a touch sloppy on my uncovered oars, but that easily fixed with leathers.
