I'm thinking it's admiration.

Lots of powerboat bashing here. Should they all just be lined up and shot or what? Should we turn this into a firearms thread?

For every liter of fuel that you run through your diesel, 2.6 kgs of CO2 is released. So assuming you have a 100 watt solar cell that took about 120 kgs of CO2 to produce, you will have paid the carbon debt on manufacturing that cell after it generates enough energy to compensate for running 46 liters of diesel through a generator. Let's assume that diesel is efficient enough only to burn 3.5 LPH. That means that carbon debt of the solar panel is cleared once you eliminate 13 hours of generator run time.

Roughly speaking, that means my solar panel is going to wipe out its relative carbon debt in less than two weeks on the hook. There isn't a diesel generator made that can make that claim, because when you run the generator, even when it's brand spanking new, you're just adding to the debt. It never subtracts.

If you think sailors are cheap, you should start hanging out with land people. Did you know that they think $100 for a pair of oars is ludicrous? Sailors think of that as "entry level."

How many KW hours will your single 100watt panel generate in a day (about 0.5kh ?)

Compared to the 3.5 LPH generator running for one hour (15 kw?)

How many 100 watt panels do you need to compete and what is your cost / KW ?

Unfortunately, the carbon generated in the production process cannot be 'wiped out'. It will stay there and the only way to avoid it getting generated would be by not producing the solar panel.

Phrases like 'relative carbon debt' sound great by they only cover up the fact that the s.c. green power alternatives are in fact just a different way of making the same old harm.

If you want to live green - forego the solpanel, the genset (the generators) and the fridge, the laptop, the autopilot (the consumers). Go to bed after sunset and eat fresh produce ... green, healthy and reasonable.

We can easily live greener lives by CONSUMING less = having to generate less.

It's not an all or nothing situation. Using solar panels is preferable to consuming fossil fuels. Sunlight and wind are free, renewable energies.

To add to thread drift I have a question that I have never been able to understand.

How can a pound of diesel give up 2.6kg of CO2? Plus all the other stuff that comes away when burned.

I never have been able to figure that out. CO2 is pretty light I think so that would be a lot of CO2.

How much CO2 is there in an exhaled breath?

If a pound of diesel can ACTUALLY do that, doesn't it violate the laws of physics?
It's something for nothing, like gold from lead.

If it's actually true, all we need to do to lose weight is breathe!
Who needs weight watchers?? ROFL !

Yes because industry and internal combustion engines aren't the problem. Humans are.

A few years ago when this was a hotter topic in the press out came the revelation that "farts" from beef cattle emit more pollutants than all the factories, etc. So stop eating any animals and save the world by killing all animals that fart.
