Sailor Lost; 406 EPIRB Activated 30nm N of Key West

[IMG][/IMG]A good friend of mine on rhumb line overnight passage from FT Myers Beach to Key West is missing. His EPIRB was activated 30 NM North of Key West last night. The vessel is a 40' Piver Lodestar Trimaran. The owner, Jay Rydberg was solo.

Anyone transiting the area and sighting the vessel, please call USCG Petty Officer Madina at 305 415 6800 AND PLEASE PM ME AS WELL!

That really sucks man; I hope they find him with a sprained ankle and torn sails. Nothing than a few weeks and a few bucks won't fix.

EPIRB but no wreckage whatsoever. That is bizare. Do you know if it is a type I or type II (manual or self launching)? Did he keep it in the cockpit or in the cabin? Maybe it just went overboard and he sailed on . . .. Sorry to hear this - keep us apprised.

Most Pivers are getting pretty long in the tooth these days--any idea what shape the boat was in? If plywood construction there will be large chunks of the boat floating--large enough for someone to stay on probably, in the worst case scenario. How was the weather down there?

It WAS a 35', but a sugar scoop stern was added making it 40'

The EPIRB was inside the cabin, and required human intervention to get into the water unless the boat broke up

WX= 15-20k out of the North. 5' seas

It's close in enough that there should be plenty of assets the CG can use to search the area.

If he was headed anywhere other than North and those were long frequency seas that's about as good as conditions get. Hopefully he got bored, got drunk, and threw the EPIRB into the ocean in a rebellion against marine electronics.

Was there a life raft on board? It's hard to imagine the boat breaking breaking up spilling out the EPIRB and no debris field seen. However, it's hard to imagine a scenario where the EPIRB would end up in the water unintentionally....I can maybe imagine dropping the EPIRB overboard while boarding a liferaft/dinghy....
