WOW, I remember you telling me the story about a week ago.
Small world.

I really doubt the boat flipped over due to weather conditions alone. There was a Searunner tri that had the bow of a rotten AMA break off in the med a few years ago and it pitch poled/ half sank due to that in around 25 knots.

I'm still confused about the round trip to Ft Myers in such a short period of time. He sailed to Ft Meyers after stopping in the Marqueas; didn't like the looks of the super secure mooring field there and decided to sail back and leave his boat on a "mooring" in KY for hurricane season?

As I said, I hope and pray for a good outcome to this. Though I only spent a couple hours with him, I could tell there was a kindness about him, and a gentle way in his spirit. He is in my thoughts and prayers.

Jays boat doesn't point. He was in the tortugas, and wanted to come back to KW. Instead of waiting for the approaching cold front, he went the best course east he could make, which brought him to FMB, then he rode the cold front back south... In other words he made one hell of a long tack.

I must confess that I am not terribly convinced that a plywood boat has any great bouyancy reserves to keep it afloat once compromised. Sure that plywood is bouyant, but not much - and plenty of boat has chunks of non-bouyant stuff attached to it.

This sounds like a hope for the best, but prepare for the worst scenario.........

Most multis have multiple compartments that will hold air, so it is highly unlikely there won't be large chunks of a boat afloat even if run down by a freighter. One that just broke up in very heavy seas or capsized would certainly have large sections afloat. Look at all the chunks of fiberglass boats that turn up, and fiberglass isn't inherently buoyant.

However, I am still optimistic the boat and the owner are afloat, just delayed due to mechanical difficulties. I look forward to hearing his tale.

Jay's not a drunk, and seems immune to sea sickness... If he lit the EPIRB, he meant to!

I know the spirit you meant that post in, but damnit, it could be any one of us out there, and I guarantee he is not enjoying it.

I think he was talking about the mystery passenger. I assume the CG has flown over the anchorages in the Shark River and Cabbage Key, etc??

Re: Sailor Lost; 406 EPIRB Activated 30nm N of Key West

The Coasties claim to have laid eyes on every spit of land, aid to nav, and shallow water between FMB and KW out 100 miles.... It is not looking good.

In 40 years on the water, I've had 3 go down under me... one was intentionally sunk, just a little premature (Spiegel Grove).. another was a woodie that lost a plank off Steinhatchee, (fortunately in 6' of water), and a small tug I managed to trip by letting the wire get too far abeam.. all in all I've been lucky and never spent more than an hour in the water before being plucked out.

The fact there has been no wreckage leads me to hope Jay is clinging to 3/4 Time trying to figure out just how long he can make his fresh water last. The man is a survivor; he's been through a lot in his life.... hope he survives this one!
