We had the sailing vessel under the French flag to make the Cuba journey. After two phone calls with the State Dept. and then the final call to the father of Jay to inform him of our actions.

It was called off. Mr. Rydberg did not want to have his son as some media attention that we felt would have produced the greater effort technology for SAR. We went into stand-down.

Jay that is about the best I (H34) can do for you.

Godspeed on your journey and thanks for being a courageous sailor from ALASKA!

Farewell my ALASKA friend

Well H34, may The Lord bless you richly for the manner in which you tried. Your fellow countrymen can be proud of you,

Re: Sailor Lost; 406 EPIRB Activated 30nm N of Key West

Last week one TV commentator tried to cross the pacific with totally blind guy. It will be the first blind guy to cross the pacific on double hand sailing boat. The boat was Bristol Channel Cutter with fully electric and high tech supports. But unluckily the boat was attacked by whale about 800 nm east of Japan coast and sunk in few hours. He operated 3 bilge pumps but he could not save the boat so he threw the blind guy into the life raft and grabbed epirb, satellite phone camera and VHF. Luckily they were saved by navy. Now I say **** happens to everyone even you are on very well prepared boat. So you guys please be careful and enjoy sailing! UW!

I know the spirit you meant that post in, but damnit, it could be any one of us out there, and I guarantee he is not enjoying it.
Thanks Jay for helping others to learn about true solo-sailing.
Sail on JAY!
Sail on!

9/29/2013 UPDATE:

As of today, Jay's remains are still in Cuba. There has been a 99.9% positive DNA ID match.

The respective governments are both not in any hurry to get anything done; celebrities travel back and forth which much fanfare, yet one man's humble remains cannot seem to find their way home to give his family closure.

I will update this thread as I know more.

I'm sure anyone interested could get a permit to legally sail to Cuba to collect the remains. Might want to look into cremation prior to the trip to make loading a bit easier.

Has the Cuban Interests office been contacted directly?

http://www.cubadiplomatica.cu/sicw/E...#TransferCorps

If they handle the transfer of remains to Cuba, perhaps they can address this also.

Oh God. The last I heard was Jay's sister retrieved the body. Oh God. This is making me sick! Oh God! It seems that SENATOR MARK BEGICH ignored my request to assist in retrieval of an ALASKAN.

I SWEAR BY GOD I WILL MAKE THE SAIL AND RETURN JAY BACK TO HIS GREAT STATE OF ALASKA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My vessel is ready to immediately set sail!

No doubt you're no fan of that senator for other reasons, but do you really expect any sitting Senator to stick their neck out in this. Give Rubio's office a call and see what they say.

Just completed formal application to the Treasury Department. I sent my BIO and a link to this forum. I truly feel the application will be granted.

My Hunter 34 is fully equipped to make the safe passage. I have AIS to keep the MEGA ships from running me over. I really would like to take a Spanish speaking person along. Anybody with sailing experience that speaks Spanish please contact me if you have the time to make this journey.

I agree with boatguy. Give Rubio a call. Since he sailed out Florida, and lived in the Keys, it might spark their interest.

Re: Sailor Lost; 406 EPIRB Activated 30nm N of Key West

If you are serious about going, give sailing services a call in Miami. They might be able to find you someone to translate. the problem is they'll all be Cuban and have some major chip on their shoulders about going and cooperating in any way with the Cuban govenment. You really need or find yourself a spainard, but in reality mot officials speak OK English.

you should also contact the Yacht Club at Marina Hemingway. the commodore is like a lifetime polical appointee and can make things happen. He got medicine delivered 200 miles from Havana from an email we sent him via Winlink. All totally legal I'm sure via the embargo!
