Re: Sailor Lost; 406 EPIRB Activated 30nm N of Key West

So, so sad. Was hoping for the best, alas it was not to be.

I hope that the fact his body (and boat) have been found will provide at least partial closure to family and friends.

Capngo and H34, you have provided us with the best example how to behave in situations like this. The highest standard of mariner's behaviour.

Sad news indeed. There was enough about the situation that was odd that I had really held out hope.

I do hope we learn more. Part of what we do as a community is discuss and dissect. That rarely seems to be disrespectful (only when egos become more important that discussion). Regardless, that is for another day.

My condolences to Jay's family and friends: May your good memories help you through the hard days.

I think we will find that he died at the helm of his boat of something that could have taken him working at, say, a cash register. He died while pursuing a passion, and a new one at that. If he had to die so young, that's not so bad.

I wondered if he wouldn't show up in Cuba, but I thought alive. It's just sad when someone dies that young.

Jay wanted to sail to Haiti to bring medical supplies and aid. Tragically 3/4 Time made it to Cuba. May the impoverished people of Cuba enjoy what Jay brought them.

Rest in peace, Jay.
I hope your family can find peace in the closure and in the knowledge that he sailed to the end with a mission of mercy in his heart.
Thank you for keeping us posted -- and I join others who hope that his story as it unfolds can make us all better sailors, so please share what you find.

Re: Sailor Lost; 406 EPIRB Activated 30nm N of Key West

So sorry to hear about Jay. He was a good friend of my nephew Mike here in Alaska. We met 20 years ago when my nephew came up to stay with me for the summer and we all had the same summer job. Mike and Jay became friends that summer and Mike ended up moving in with Jay for most of the summer. Then Mike went back to Oklahoma, and Jay went on with his life. They reconnected again 20 years later after Mike had married and moved to Alaska with his family. I reconnected with Jay when I spent a weekend at Mikes and Jay was there remodeling his kids bathroom. I gave Jay a ride back to Fairbanks after that weekend and we got to know each other better. Then I got to hear about all of Jays Adventures in Florida, how quick he learned how to say, starting a little small business out of finding old junk boats, fixing them up and renting them out. I heard he moved down there to be closer to his son. And he was happy. Sorry to see you go so soon.

FWIW, Jay's boat foundered on iron shore in a very rural section of beach east of Havana, west of Mantansas. The Cuban Gov't will not participate in any salvage. Hopefully the locals will salvage what they can before Mother Nature gets it all.

More details please.
If EPIRB was found north of KW, how the hell the boat could end up in Havana. Someone must sail close to Cuba to end up on the beach?

I read the first line, the boat has been found, and was so glad, then read the second line. Off on the next part of the journey.

Condolences to the family and friends.

No one has wanted to face facts that none of this made sense from the beginning. I suppose the fact that the boat and body has been found will at least limit any further searching and speculation about what types of hi tech resources could be used to find a boat that couldn't have sunk.
