That a young person is impossibly idealistic does not seem worthy of scorn to me. That a youth makes big mistakes is less interesting to me than how they act afterwards. Not what they say - what they do.

I really can't agree here. After rereading the article, it would not surprise me to learn that this person has a mental illness. Either genetic or caused by drug abuse. I actually feel sorry for the dude the more I think about it.

Hey, he said he'd pay the tow off at $10.00 per month. Did you know that insurance companies do not consider a male anywhere close to being mature until age 30.

Also, in the book Lord Jim, I believe the Captain abandoned his ship with a load of Chinamen onboard. The thing is the ship never sank.

I would suspect that young fellow is the product of a family/community/nation where he never had to provide for his own needs or suffer the consequences of his actions or lack of actions.

As intelligence is sometimes defined as the ability to see future results of present actions, I would also estimate he had a low intellectual ability, or that his mind was substance impaired.

The whole story brings to mind the favorite quote of my Aunt Thelma.

"The Lord must love stupid people, because he made an awful lot of them."

Actually, the only problem was that he took his voyage during the wrong part of the year. Otherwise he might be on the beach with some cute girl getting high and enjoying the view! (his boat anchored just passed the surf line!)

The point about the insurance was the maturity factor. If he'd a been 60 and did this, now that's a problem. Here he hurt no one and plans to pay off his tow at 10 bucks a month while he saves up for his new vessel............

Kinda like NASA, how many rockets did they crash before one actually worked?

Maybe if he'd had a decent laptop and internet connection he'd a been happy.........and stayed on board and had a little more grapefruit juice!

That'd be Buck Walker. It happened in Palmyra atoll. It's a private island chain that is now staffed with scientists....I have the book and read it multiple times (favorite book) saw the movie also....it was good too!

Just another indication that their first priority - protecting and helping people - is no longer that. They are only looking out for their (departments) interests.

Didn't know that, Owner was trying to give me money after I got them to the ramp, I didn't take any of course, I told him to take the money and get a case of WD-40 to save his motor.

I know that area. The closest access to the Atlantic is either Canaveral, which has a lock, or down south at Sebastian Inlet. Either would require some good sailing skills without a motor.

I haven't read all the replies here, but there's no point in dumping on this guy. Here's a fellow who didn't grow up with boats, didn't have the means or opportunity to sail, but had a notion. He does a ballsy thing. He gets stuck, and chances a trip to the shore. He didn't risk another person's life. It's easy to call it lubberly, but we could be reading about his big exploits some day – and none of them will speak more than this about the call of the sea.
