I'd trade a laptop for dreadlocks and pot.

Trade a laptop for a crab pot, at least I can keep eating, I don't want to lose my pot ... belly. Nothing like a fresh dungeness crab with garlic and butter and beer!

Re: Sailor abandons boat off Florida coast

"He said he had never sailed before but read a book about it and then practiced for a day. He spent a couple of days in Indian Harbour Beach before setting sail on Dec. 14 to New Smyrna Beach aboard the sailboat which had no motor and relied entirely on the wind.

It never ceases to amaze me how some people think that all is required to be proficient in something is to read a book. Reminds me of the movie, "Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines" when the german officer decides he can fly in the race and sits at the controls and starts to read the flying manual. "Number on, sit down!"

Maybe he could enroll into " Common Sense Decision Making- 101" at his local community college.

Didn't I read here that the weather was accurately predicted to be really crappy? Note to self: when cruising take along an AM radio so I can receive the weather forecasts. I might need more but it's a good start.

Yeah, apparently no one ever told him about waves and he thought you navigated by following the shore line.

More proof that you really do need some kind of engine for cruising.

Jonah Turner — cold, hungry, tired of drinking grapefruit juice — looked out at the fog-shrouded ocean surrounding his sailboat off Beverly Beach and decided it was time to go.

Actually I did a search on CF and found that he had posted his intentions here. The majority of replies told him to go for it.
