And before that NAS Pensacola, and before that....................point is I was only ever at 3 "real" military bases: Cherry Point, MCAS Yuma, and Bogue Field....................plus I guess Parris Island counts but speaking of folks with mental deficiency they are there in abundance.
Btw, I really like the Tartan 33 but am concerned about the cored hulls. What do you think?

Well, ok but I don't know how I got you fired up but I can imagine you've got something against Naval Bases vs other military bases? That doesn't seem to have much to do with sailing but I can name marine and army bases I've trained and served at too but I don't know how that qualifies me as "you fellas."

Re: Sailor Abandons Boat off Florida coast
Cotemar,
This Alpha 42 was actually closer in cost to 700K by the time she left for the BVI from NY. Either way there is a lot of money invested in that boat and I'm sure there are efforts being launched to recover the boat ASAP, if not only to find out how and why the damages occurred so they can be examined and accounted for in the subsequent boats that are being built at the moment. I can assure you that a salvage effort that far offshore and in those conditions would not be an easy one by any means. It's unfortunate that they set off in such conditions this time of year. I hope everyone is safe and accounted for. With a sail magazine writer aboard I am sure that there will be plenty of eye witness accounts released soon.

Yep - the abandoned boat in this thread was only about $500, I think. Well, $501.75 with the remaining grapefruit.

When I was "this dude's" age I was sailing around responsibly in an O'Day 20... And definitely NOT mooching grapefruit off the homeless camp. You need to work on your reading skills... He mooched the grapefruit.
I really don't understand why you find the need to defend the idiot.... Who sounds like a total screw up.

Exactly the problem, living by a different set of rules, the ones that say don't worry about looking like an idiot, just as long as someone else cleans up after you. Check back in 12 months, I'll bet the county hasn't collected half of what it's owed.
On the ride back to Mommies house, she probably had to pay for lunch, including an appetizer, too.

Seems to me it wasn't his sailing abilities that let him down but his anchor. Had it held we may well be talking about this guy who grabbed his dream by the balls, bought a cheap boat cruising the islands living on way less than $500.

We'll never know how far off the beach he "anchored" but most know that's never a good thing if avoidable. I've personally seen two boats drag into the surf, and heard of countless more. Surfers know that every now and then a larger set of waves rolls through ... Serious readers may recall Burdick's The Ninth Wave.
I think that's part of sailing ability seamanship. The best anchor in the world won't hold if it isn't set. Easy with an engine, tougher without. And we all know "experienced" sailors who don't set their anchors properly.
He said something like he wasn't sure he could make it another day but he wasn't in any apparent danger or injured. He still had something to eat/ drink but was tired of it. What was the big deal? Scared and wet is no fun to be sure but I'd bet my last 5 million bucks this would have been a SAR op if he'd had a way to signal.
He followed his dream? He grabbed it by the balls? Come on fellas, get real. He didn't have a dream, he had a thought, perhaps a notion, of a cheap way to live. Sometimes you have a great notion, sometimes ya don't. Thank you, Ken Kesey. You defenders are nice guys I'm sure but ya don't know a thing more than we do about the facts.
But ya want to blame it on the anchor, be my guests.

For some odd reason the expression "pipe dream" came to mind when reading this. For those of us versed in obscure computer software that's a double chuckle.
I am enjoying this thread immensely.

Okay, let's play devil's advocate. The anchor did hold, he jumped overboard, went home dried out, recharged his cell phone. Then what? His boat is still anchored a short way off the beach. You supply the appropriate scenario.

The guy is obviously an artist type individual whereas most guys I would say are more engineer/tech type. The old left brain / right brain thing.
Even if he did have money, he probably wouldn't be totally prepared, but he would notice the beautiful color changes of the sea as the sun went down and how clouds of various shapes and sizes affect that color as they passed over.
As far as my reading skills, I'm learning each and everyday. My goal is to be a liberal artist so when I sail down the Eastern Coast of Florida (already sailed most of the southern coast/panhandle) I can notice the beautiful beaches, clouds, sky etc while I'm being brutalized/fried by the sun. (again)
Also, we need these type guys. They see things in a different way. In the future we may read about a guy that bought a ............. let's say a Cape Dory 25' for $500, stocked it with several bags of whole grain brown rice along with a propane hot plate, pot, water, beer, weed, etc and sailed the same course Jonah embarked on but made it all the way to maybe New Orleans. Whole trip plus boat cost maybe $1,000-$1,500.
Whereas the normal way is to work say 50 years or so, paying for and take some sailing lessons from some dude that believes sailing up to a mooring is the best that it gets in sailing skill (shows he's never raced on a crowded start line with winds around 20 knots and gusting; moorings don't yell at you or threaten your life when you bump them), buying several boats, etc, etc
This guy skipped all that BS. He read the book, bought a boat, and did it! Well almost. He does owe $10,00 per month because I believe he still has to pay the tow .............

The "you fellas" refers to those piling on. The military thing was the old you are navy, I'm marine kind a thing which I figured you'd pickup on when I described the folks (drill Instructors) and their mental deficiencies on Parris Island. I'd never seen such mean ass rednecks in my entire life until that time .......................except maybe my dad when he was mad!
I have nothing against the military..............even the navy.

Re: Sailor Abandons Boat off Florida coast
Thomm, drop yer mouse ... raise yer hands... stand up and slowly back away from the computer. The West Virginia water has trickled all the way down to Norfolk.
Go have a beer and sail yer Bristol or go on back to REAL sailing on those racing cats you've mentioned o' so many times.
The one thing I found refreshing in your completely baseless support is that you managed to work in some arty impressions, plus the terms "liberal" and "Parris Island" in the same "argument." No easy thing.

Thanks for your support.
That's what the GI Bill can do for a young man. He can "do" Parris Island where afterward he is praying for war then later in life maybe have the ability to support a young man on his sailing quest. And also notice the beautiful sunsets, water color and "whatnot."
