Sailing Movies Recommendations

Hi all, last week we watched Maiden Voyage and we really enjoyed it.

Then we watched All is Lost and we kept cracking up at what appeared to be ridiculous mistakes. Even though our experience to date consists of reading the ASA 101-104 books, we kept thinking... "that's probably not how you do it". I assume this movie is to sailing what Cliffhanger was to rock climbing :-).

Could you guys recommend some sailing movies or documentaries worth watching? Thanks for your suggestions! BB

Yes, it is.

Learn how to use PROP WALK when docking!

Learn how to identify gorillas!

Learn how to oil an engine.

Learn how to repair an en suite shower.

The list goes on.

Actually it should be called "Boat Fixit 101!!!"

Re: Sailing Movies Recommendations

Since this is an obviously recurring question, have you considered doing a search on "movies" or "sailing movies?"

Here or on Google would find you tons of answers.

It's more real than All is Lost and if you go sailing you'll need to learn to laugh at yourself...a lot.

Re: Sailing Movies Recommendations

On the documentary side, I just watched Matt Rutherford's new movie, "Red Dot on the Sea", an account of his non-stop sail around North and South America.
Non-stop.
In a 27' Albin Vega.
Did I mention Solo?
I'd say the beauty of this one is that it's an amazing sailing story that sailors and non sailors can appreciate. The real story is about Matt and the struggles that brought him to this voyage.
I purchased it on Vimeo, I think it's scheduled for a Netflix release soon though.

Bravo!

Re: Sailing Movies Recommendations

the last 15min of captains courageous, white squall, cliff Robertson made a good sailboat movie but the title escapes me, dove, das boot, early teasers of 'voyage of the essex' look pretty good...

Don't forget ace navigation tips:

Capt. Ron: (as the engine quits, in the middle of a storm) "Well, we're almost there."

Martin: "How do you know?"

Capt. Ron: "Because when we left, we had just enough fuel to get there, and we're out of fuel."

The Cliff Robertson movie is "Wind" with Matthew Modine and Jennifer Grey. Very schmaltzy, but as far as the sailing itself goes, particularly if you're a racer, probably the most accurate movie you'll find as far as on the water strategy, tactics, and lingo goes. And very weirdly, the whole entire movie is available on YouTube.

A second vote for the Australian movie Dead Calm starring Sam Neill, Nicole Kidman and Billy Zane.
