Sailing Mates

Hi All,
I have recently purchased a 1975 Hunter 25 with a Honda outboard motor. I am single with a passion for sailing. I am still in the learning process and am not looking for a significant other, but would enjoy a companion with more experience in sailing. Most everyone I have met at the marina are couples that have their own boats and are not interested in going out. I was wondering if anyone could advise on where to find sailing mates? Thanks, Sailorette

Re: Sailing Mates

You might want to post this in the crew wanted/needed forum and provide a way to contact you as well as a little more specific location; Florida is a big state.

If you are in the Keys let me know.

Re: Sailing Mates

Glad to see you bought a boat!

Congrats! Finding crew (and crew only) can be a pain. Like Tom said - crew wanted ad here or keep poking around the marina.

If there is a sailing school near you maybe ping the instructors and tell them you are looking for newer sailors to invite on board. Probably better than a "want' ad as you will likely attract the usual suspects that way - at least sailing students are really there to sail.

Re: Sailing Mates

You can join a sailing club. Sailing clubs are there to share experience, sail together, and provide a venue for ongoing learning.

And everyone's favorite sailing club member is one who has her own boat!

Re: Sailing Mates

Start sailing with some other sailors. We often go out on each other's boats. It is fun and good experience in learning how different boats handle. If I go down to the Marina and start getting my boat ready somebody drifts over. The first year it took me a minute to find some people but know all I do is throw a post on Facebook. The local colleges might have clubs that would love to get on the water.
I set mine up to single hand it but it is always more fun with people. Good luck it will be a blast, have fun.

Re: Sailing Mates

If you give a little more precise location than what is listed in your profile, you may get a response from the people here.

Re: Sailing Mates

Get involved in a race night at a local marina. You won't need any skills, but your skill set should grow quickly with weekly sail time on the water. You'll meet competent sailors and willing crew who love to sail and will invite you to sail with them on their boats. Don't waste your time with "cruisers" since they are generally "sailors?"who are chained to the dock talking weather, electronics, AIS, Sat phones, generators, Beaufort wind scales, rogue waves, anchor preferences, as they prepare for the big adventure that never happens since they never fix everything on their well found boats that must be repaired before leaving. That is generally because their boats are floating condos as a concession to their reluctant wives(sometimes braindead and uninspired) who would rather be shopping in boutique malls, lunching with indispensable friends and spending time with their grandchildren ashore. Of course, there are none of these types on Cruisersforum so as Tomfl stated above you might want to post in the Crew Wanted section of this forum . . . ahem. Good luck, good sailing . . . and, if you're truly bitten with the bug there's nothing quite like it . . . well, but then again there was this woman I met in . . .
