Sailing advice...Australia to Asia then East
Hey All,
I purchased a serious offshore 38 footer ( flatish deck, extremely strongly built as was designed to go to Antarctica etc) with the aim of going for that extended passage I always dreamt about...Life is finally allowing me to disconnect from the world (for a while at least) but I'm not sure which way to head...am on east coast of Australia and our fine country is getting extremely expensive so need to depart as soon as I can (which is around September given all the things I need to finalise)...idea in my head is to go North then East...so most likely east coast NSW to Darwin, then Indonesia, then Thailand, then Japan then across the Pacific...its the longest route but will give me plenty of places to stop over and explore...I know September is not ideal start date but thats when I am no longer working and just hanging...it may be wiser to hang about below Brisbane till next season but I wouldnt mind going sooner....oh an am solo at the moment...may find a couple of mates or crew to join me at various stages...
So from all the wise forumnites and sailors..what say ye about my plans?

You can go as far north as Hervey Bay, a very nice area and be safe from cyclones.

Hey, you forgot Malaysia and Philippines on the way.
How many years are you planning on this taking? You could easily put in several years just getting as far as Japan

Okee, good luck with your plans, we plan to do the Pacific as well but via NZ, want to get back there before my ex father in law passes, he taught me to sail over 30 years ago, sail around some of my old areas up north then up and into the Islands, when you come past Mackay and if you call in please come and say hello, we live in the marina aboard our 38' tank haha. A small note, September is late in the Northern Hemisphere year, and the weather will deteriorate as winter comes on. I know it's southern hemisphere summer, but that's how it is on the other side of the line......
Seriously, though, you will be well served by checking the anticipated weather for the time of year along your routes.

Hi, question as I have not done this as yet? wouldn't the weather be fairly constant where OKEE plans to sail, it appears to be between 0 and +15 deg latitudinal?

And summer is the time you DON'T want to be in the lower latitudes. So leaving in September is fine, as long as you plan to be close to or north of the equator by around December.

Re: Sailing advice...Australia to Asia then East
So, Oct through to Feb around 0 to +15 deg would be in the northern hemisphere and therefore winter, does that area still have typhoons then or are they predominantly in summer months?

Mocking, I still don't know how to post links, but something for you to look at are Typhoon tracks along that route at that time of year. I was surprised that Japan has no typhoon-free months, historically speaking. Individual years vary, of course.

5 deg. either side of the equator should be safe.
I sailed in October from the Gold Coast - Noumea - Vanuatu - Solomon Isl.- New Ireland - PNG - Philippines. Great trip, many islands on the way to stop. Philippines are great.
From the Philippines mostly day sail's to Borneo, Malaysia - Singapore - Thailand.
Don't rush, take your time.

WOW, Seman that sounds like the trip that I will need to prepare and do in a years time, love that region of the south pacific.
Did you encounter any pirate activity around Thailand.
How did you find PNG, there are regular reports of PNG locals harassing boaties. Sounds like you had a great trip.

Re: Sailing advice...Australia to Asia then East
There is NO typhoon free season in the NW Pacific. Good weather forecasts available though.
I am setting off in couple of weeks - Brisbane, Indonesia, PI, HK.
Weatherfax, Navtex, sat images, voice, Sat C and you will be ok. Maybe have to wait for a typhoon to pass.
Some great sailing and terrific places and people.
Go for it.
