I think there is an above average representation of bums and above average representation of decent people in the cruising world. Not much of the middle man though. In such respect, cruising is an extreme sport.

Wow, you folks have never sailed in the northeast.

Sailboat types: well-heeled, preppy, wasps, guys named Chip or flat-chested blond women named Heather or Muffy.

Powerboat types: Tatooed, drink too much, weigh too much often from Rhode Island. Guys named Joe, women named Joe.

Just go into the Oar on a Saturday night and you'll see what I mean. (But take this post with a grain of salt LOL. Sterotypes are just that: stereotypes.)

How true that one is. My last visit to the fuel station-
He came out and said "how much" and
I said "10 dollars, but where is your head and your candy? " to which he replied
"No candy, no bathrooms and no loitering"
I finally got him to tell me where the bathrooms were, but he would not let me go unless someone was standing with him there at the dock.
Sailors must be a real pain in the butt for these guys.

I think transcients can be pain in the argh but they are like poor tourists and tolerated in most places. Well rooted vagabonds (a.k.a. sailors-residents) can be another bunch of issues altogether.

Been places where we were refused entry to the marina. The marina was for yachts, not for sailing boats, you know. Probably, seen from the asylum of their clean desks and air conditioned offices, in our clean, but PLAIN, clothes we looked, well, like bums.
