seriously thou...

i know we discuss this a lot while trying to avoid taking the issue head on.

i dont like sailing in open water without a gun on board (i once shot at shark that was narrowing in on my puppy in her doggie life jacket).

what is the option for sailing in international waters? do we just hide the gun on board and send it to davey jones when / if the situation arises? how does one sail from country that each have a different gun control laws? for that matter who does one sail between states?

**rolls eyes** an ak47... really?
What's wrong with an AK? Seems like that'd be a natural choice for repelling boarders. You can make a lot of holes with one pretty fast, and it's quicker to reload than a shotgun.

It's not like they need much in terms of long range capability, so accuracy isn't critical. They have great reliability and ammo is cheap and available almost everywhere. Cheap enough you can afford to practice at sea and get good with it. (not to mention it being really fun to blast flotsam as it floats past.....reactive targets are fun cause you know right where you hit and can adjust to get better fast)

I myself would go for a carbine chambered in 9mm or .45acp. Compact and uses the same ammo as a sidearm. A hi-point carbine would be good because I would feel no guilt about tossing it over the side...

Re: Sailboat Seized with Guns in Tulum, Mexico

If it really was an AK-47, which is a fully automatic rifle, then his ownership of it was probably illegal in Florida and Panama as well. But the odds are it was not an AK-47, every rifle that looks like one gets called one in the nooze, because that's the best way to demonize all the rest.

Odds are it was the usual SKS, a semi-automatic version. Idle curiousity, it would be nice to know those details. If it was an unlicensed true AK-47...goodbye.

Either way, Mexico doesn't care who you are or what your excuse is, they don't want foreginers bringing guns in for any reason at any time. Multiple guns? Yeah, they're going to take a very dim view of that. Even if they were legal to possess at the last and next port.

A couple of tips for those travelling abroad:
1 - do not wear camo shorts and a wife-beater in Paris. Or Munich. Or Turin. Or anywhere else in Europe. Really.
2 - The US fetish with guns is not generally shared in most other peaceful countries. Nor are the paranoid scenarios and rationalizations used by some gun-owners to justify their belief that guns will keep them safe.

Travel is your chance to experience other cultures... and not to export yours. Enjoy your guns at home. And leave them there.

(how'm I doing Dennis? )

A truly cautionary tale for the rest of us or at least those of us who pay attention to such things.

Too bad. Being from Michigan, he probably thought he needed the firepower.

"1 - do not wear camo shorts "
I think it is Barbados...or maybe the Turks...where it actually is illegal to wear camo attire and you may be arrested and jailed on the spot for it.

Although, white shorts on a white hulled boat ARE camo, aren't they? On the boat?

Re: Sailboat Seized with Guns in Tulum, Mexico

The worst part of guns is that you have to use them...

And to use guns in a boat at open sea is pure madness if you ask me. Need an ironclad for that.

We have a saying here in Turkey; "if a gun is drawn, it MUST be fired..."

When are we going to understand the fact that there is no winner when it comes to guns ?

And when I say guns, I mean all of them, all kinds... An AK47 is not different from a close range small caliber pistol.

I really have difficulties in understanding why some people feel the necessity (not urge-urge I can understand) to carry one or many aboard.

Someone says 600 rounds is less than fair for an AK 47... This is insane... This has nothing to do with crusing/liveaboard/visiting different countries and cultures...

This is simply being afraid of something I can not name yet...

And knowing the next boat to ours could be carrying such ammo, certainly puts me on edge...

My thoughts might seem "naive" to some who read, but come on; the fact that you have the right to carry one, doesn't dictate you have to. What makes you carry one is something else... Not the right, but something else...

Sailing with wife and two kids; I would never even dream of carrying one...

And this all comes from someone who had experience of firing AK47 (and many others) in the army. (it is compulsory in my country- 15 months)

I also dislike people on the cruising community, who make the stupid mistake of dividing countries they visit as "no rule of law", "yes rule of law".

When we visit Mexico, we might share our individual experiences of how the law worked/did not work for our individual cases, thus providing an experience pool for other cruisers...

Lol, no passports and a boat full of guns.

Even looks like a winner.
