I started on blogger, but moved to Wordpress and hosted it myself. Not free, but pretty cheap
for hosting at Godaddy and I control it all myself; no ads unless I put them there or allow them.
Wordpress can also be hosted free some places, though you may not have the same control.
Wordpress is head
and shoulders superior to Blogger, Blogger/Blogspot is really clumsy by comparison. You can extend WordPress incredibly with tons of free plugins and addons in a way you can't with Blogger and you have many varied choices of look, feel and style that you can't do on Blogger either.
I wish that Sailblogs had a feature though where I could mirror my blog there or have my posts from Wordpress feed over there. The concentration of sailing related blogs in one community has to be better for driving traffic.
