most masts today are aluminum, so the skinnier (thinner) will need more spreaders to keep them on line...it is a complex subject with not just a one word answer, ergo the engineers who design the sticks.

And, when someone is making plans and preparations, is there a method of coordinating with other boaters who might be planning the same passage.

Safety in numbers kind of thought...
Yes there are definitely certain times you want to make certain passages. "World Cruising Routes" by Jimmy Cornell is the best source for timing of small boat passages.

There is also "Ocean Passages of the World" aka British Admiralty Publication #136. BA#136 comes with a map of the whole world showing major SAILING routes and timing for each. This map can be obtained separately (and much more cheaply) as BA chart #5308.

And there are Atlases of Pilot Charts for the various oceans or major parts thereof. They can be downloaded for free from http://msi.nga.mil/NGAPortal/MSI.por...2&pubCode=0003 although I am currently have problems getting the link to work.

You left out my favorite rigs, schooner, yawl & unstayed cat or cat ketch (Nonsuch & Freeedom). A neat feature of ketch & yawl rigs is you can use the mizzen to weather vane the boat to keep it from sailing at anchor.

Re: Sail Configuration and Keel/Rudder Design

There was a thread yesterday you truly should read . About a trip to Hawaii going bad , very very informative . I read that, and then found out about the 1979 Fastnet race 10 that when't terribly bad . Many lives lost. I watched an hour movie on YouTube. After watching this i'm very glad i've spent the last 2 years completely redoing my great little racing sloop to a live aboard for strength & safety . It will be just me single handing so i don't care for anything bigger , i have what i have. And yes Hawaii is my final destination.
