I calculate the "overdue time" as a rough percentage of the trip. 10 minutes on an hour voyage but 2-3 hrs on an overnighter...1 day in 5-7 day trip...etc..etc.
Depending on the boat, weather
and how bad the skipper
wants to keep to a schedule (motorsailing when necessary only to keep on sched, etc)...all those go into the mix and it's important to call ahead if you expect to go over that "extended ETA" . You have to carefully explain to that party whether you will/won't or can't make that update and when to call it in to the authorities.
