Many moons ago when I lived in Newport
, RI, I used to chat with a guy who looked like a pirate and always seemed to have some scheme he was working on. Last I knew of him he was planning on taking a large schooner down to Honduras
where he would pick up exotic hardwoods direct from whomever cuts it, and then would sail back to the USA with the wood and sell it to cabinet makers and high-end boatbuilders. He seemed to have put a lot of thought and energy into the project
, but I have no idea if he was ever able to carry it out. He also had some sort of cargo he would carry with him on the way back to Central America
that was needed down there (can't remember what it was). There's always the trade
in square grouper too. I've met a few sailors that I suspect may have made that fabled "one run" in their lives.
