Thanks for this! It's likely that this very ignorance is responsible for keeping me Earthbound all these years and cruising the seas instead of the stars!

Re: S/V ???

Well, if stars or Latin don't provide your idea of a name, how about a sea? I believe there are 124 different seas. Wiki have a list of all those seas; some are pretty neat, understood my mariners, and work in many languages.

Re: S/V ?

Why the complicating "S/V"? Is someone apt to mistake your vessel for a city bus?

"Sea Punk" is a good name, if it fits your lifestyle.

Re: S/V ?

I'm going to name my next boat "West Marine." That way, my crew will already have monogrammed gear.

Re: S/V ?

I'd proposed naming my last boat "Ding Dong." How silly would you feel hailing "Ding Dong" three times on the VHF?

Unfortunately, Wonderblond vetoed the plan.

Re: S/V ?

I once saw two boats Med-moored side by side. The first was named "Wet Dream," and the second was named "Dream Chaser."

Juxtapositions. Precious.

Re: S/V ?

A few years back on this forum, someone wanted advice naming his new Hunter. I proposed the name "Gatherer."

Get it? The Hunter Gatherer?

Re: S/V ?

I once passed a J/Boat named "Smokin' J."

They were being boarded by the Coast Guard.

That is harsh, a SC 50 in the Sea of Cortez smoked me on all points of sail, so my boat must have been a VW bus.
