Rounding Cape Horn on Lapworth Gladiator 24

Frank Guernsey rounded Cape Horn on a Lapworth Gladiator 24 in the 1970's

A Lapworth 24 Gladiator Page

Then a few years later, he undertook another voyage on a Pearson Electra which is approximately 22 and 1/2 feet long.

Did he ever complete that voyage?

The story I read is that he disappeared on that voyage, so I guess nobody knows if he completed it. I'd like to ask him how he rigged the Electra because I have one too. I read his book... really gripping descriptions of sailing the Southern ocean and enduring monstrous storms. RIP Frank, wherever you are.

A really sad tale. I read his recount of the first trip around the horn as I was slipped in the same marina in King Harbor, Redondo Beach, that he started from.

A well written account of a rough voyage around the horn.

It seems he was on a suicide run from the get-go; references to leaving every time he had issues with his partner.

I tried to follow up on his second attempt but only found articles by his wife (girlfriend?) in newspaper ads and sailing publications seeking help in finding him.

Well worth the read in my opinion.

Goat,
Yes, it did seem like he wasn't too comfortable in this world. The woman, "Mary" was his wife and by his account, they had a very passionate but stormy marriage. I also tried to find info on the Electra trip but no luck. Someone guessed that he may have been lost early on the trip off of Mexico in a big hurricane that passed at that time. The boat was 22.5' and named "MF", for Mary and Frank. Keep an eye out, maybe someone down there salvaged her??? Another thing I've been trying to find on the Internet to no avail, maybe you know...He made a video of the first Cape Horn trip and showed it around the the local yacht clubs, etc. Any idea who might have a copy? I'm sure a lot of local sailors around here would still like to see it.
