I think there are some automated devices.

Some VHF radios have load hailer and foghorns built in ??????

I actually looked into this about 2yr ago which is part of how I found this forum.

What I came up with was a 12v fire bell (anything over 600mm I think, have to check the Colregs annex for minimum size) and some sort of controller.

Fire Alarm Bells -- 2nd item on the list.

All the others I could find were for ship sized vessels.

Probably you would have to find somebody to make you something.

Fortunately(?), boats less than 20 meters in fog needn't sound signals when anchored in a U.S.-federally-designated anchorage area. But, can you imagine the cacaphony of several boats sounding bells/horns every minute or two in a non-designated anchorage, in the fog, at night? Anyone get any sleep? Good practice for working on a lightship?

In all of the states and territories of the US there are 99 such 'Special Designated Anchorages.

On the west coast of the US there are 12 in Ca, 1 in OR, none in WA and 3 in HI.

There are as many on the Great Lakes.

On the East coast there are more but such anchorages are actually rather far apart generally.

Most people ignore the rules about anchor lights, getting them to do the fog signal too is spitting in the wind.

Don't doubt that. Only in my imagination will boaters follow "the rules." Regardless, showed the anchor light when anchored off-shore Benicia Saturday night.

I bet it's less loud than having your partner use an air or manual horn accidently directed towards you...
