"Restive" featured in Eric Hiscock's Cruising Under Sail

Eric Hiscock, in his Cruising Under Sail, features a features a 31' Masthead Sloop. named Restive. The designer was Nigel Warrington Smythe. An article appeared in Yachting Monthly in 1948 and it was portrayed as a yacht with three berths, standing headroom, able to be handled single-handed and capable of ocean travel. On the basis of its description,in 1996 I purchased a sister-ship to Restive, built in Australia. It has proved itself well and brought to its owner an immense amount of satisfaction. Now, I am wondering if anyone knows the whereabouts of the original Restive! The last I heard was that someone had bought it in England and was sailing it back to North America. Can anyone shed some light on this matter?

Welcome aboard.

Of course a post like yours makes me want to try out my GoogleFu. Very nice looking boat, but no idea on the original Restive.

Re: "Restive" featured in Eric Hiscock's Cruising Under Sail

Uncle Eric ,as Eric Hiscock was known to many cruisers in the 70s was a hero of mine. I read many of his books and admired his techniques. I also had the oportunity to see Wander 2 sitting in a berth in Hawaii, looking a little forlorn, and was once able to get aboard Wanderer 3 in Tahiti(under later ownership), and spent more than a few drunken evenings aboard Wanderer 4(under later ownership) in Antigua. I also became friends with the owners of Dryac which I believe was reviewed in one of Hiscocks books. Eric Hiscock wrote good conservative advice which is more than I can say about people that followed along after him(Hal Roth and Don Street). If it had not been for the Hiscocks books, I probably would never have left the dock. Thank You Eric and Susan Hiscock.____Grant.

Wanderer iv is parked in Nelson, 30 meters away from me. Preparing for a trip to the Atlantic I believe.
