Renaming a Sailboat?

Could be a stupid question but I'll risk it? What is the proper sailing etiquette for renaming a sailboat? Don't want to piss-off Posiden you know. Now legally in Ontario Canada, how does one rename a sailboat and change the port of registry?

Re: Renaming a Sailboat?

There is a great renaming ceremony devised by John L. Vigor (I think). Involves friends and rum, you should be able to Google it.
No clue about legalities where you are.

Re: Renaming a Sailboat?

When I bought my yacht a few years ago I considered changing her name and asked the same question as the OP. Someone told me I needed to find a virgin willing to take a pee in the bilge! I'm too old to know any virgins let alone one prepared to do that for me and so the name remains the same!!

I think this is the one you are talking about: 48 Vigor's Interdenominational Boat Denaming Ceremony

Re: Renaming a Sailboat?

We were very relieved that we both liked the name of our new boat, otherwise it might not have been pretty. The second runner up had a name from The Hobbit, and that was not going to fly with the husband!

Re: Renaming a Sailboat?

I believe the law states that you are only required to change the name if it contains either sea, wind, dream, or a reference to money in it.

For example, if you purchase a boat called, Curren-sea, or Sea-duced Sea-men, the law states you just go about changing it as quickly and as quietly as possible.

We actually used this one last weekend when we renamed our Ericson 29. It must have worked because we didn't see a single Kraken on our trip!
