Re: Regret to Inform Have Lost my Boat off Honduras...

"" fear can be debilitating to many !" Absolutely so. And people differ in styles of handling fear. My style is to own up to the fear to myself, and then try to manage the situation. But that style is only one of many, including the throwing up the hands and screaming for help one. I have no real data to back this up, but I do think that the subtle training people get to let other people make decisions for them, and not take personal responsibility for outcomes is a pervasive and deleterious part of our society. ...and it ill fits its members to cross oceans, because they make terrible assumptions, like driving a boat is no different from driving a car, and the GPS'll tell me how to get there; or how about the "they'll rescue me" assumption..."

Which noteworthy sailor and author wrote in his book something like "...there's no room for fear on a small boat because it prevents you from doing what you have to do".

Lin and Larry Pardy's account in their book 'Capable Cruiser' of the unseasonal storm that struck Cabo San Lucas perfectly illustrates the so-called 'herd instinct' that too frequently affects the sailing community Capable Cruiser

In the case under consideration here though, responsibility rests squarely on the sailor who was alone - no herd instinct here.

Afraid? Perhaps, but there is no doubt in my view he was influenced by others who bade him to abandon his boat.

There was plenty of heard instinct here. People encouraged this person to just "go". Fortunately he is still alive, others persuaded to "follow their dreams BS" preached here have paid with their life. Wake up "shoestring" dreamers, reality can be brutal.

Opps... Brain Fart... I did call for a tow once... was rammed at 6 knots by a French sailboat with 4 crew motor sailing as I was nearing the end of a 47 day non stop solo crossing from St Martin... 5 miles off Start Point, Devon...
Bastard then reversed away and did a runner leaving me with this... got towed into Salcombe by the life boat... long story but had no power or engine for the last 1000 odd miles of the trip...

WTF is a trick cyclist!?!

If I'm being insulted, I want to at least understand it.

Agreed if not many threads. Not common in Aus but are apparently very common in cruising circles in USA.

Me thinks you need a group hug, but I don't know where that icon is. Maybe someone else can find it.

In the distant past, before the top dogs decided employees were spending too much time actually helping customers, one of them may have led you to a Baha Filter and explained its use. Not going to name the U.S. company, but my guess is most seasoned sailors will know. Hint: It was mentioned by a poster in this thread who passed the Baha Filter many times without knowing what it was...
