It will be interesting to see how my boat will be valued. I bought it in 2010 and the price was in British Pounds which has strengthened greatly against the Aussie Dollar. On currency conversion the purchase price has risen by $30,000 in that time. On the other hand, I was living & working in Sweden at the time and paid for the boat from Sweden, so what the boat cost me has only risen by $4000 because of the exchange rate with the Swedish kroner.

I've spent a bit on upgrading, but things like my "new" sails will be pretty old by the time it ever gets imported.

I found a SO40 for sale in Aus for $165k and I wonder if they would work backwards from that price to work out the value...

I don't think it's going to be an enjoyable experience whenever it happens

Some time since I did it but I had to fly a surveyor up from Perth to Carnarvon to value her.
He looked at the boat, looked at the bill of sale, agreed I had paid fair value and used my purchase price less the cost of a replacement mast and rig.

As someone in customs said.... they quite often found boats were worth substantially more than the paperwork would suggest.

Also..that was back in a time of high inflation when boats , depreciating in real terms, could be appreciating in $ terms. I paid the same price for my boat as she had cost new 8 years earlier.

If you're thinking of arguing depreciated value based on your use of the vessel before you arrive in OZ -- You probably should, given that your plans seems to involve years -- then the most important thing for you to do will be to arm yourself with some independent support for your 'entry' valuation. Securing a written valuation from a suitable (tame!) valuer at or near your last port may be a very good idea...

I did a fair bit of research into this subject a few years ago when I was planning to bring a boat into Australia. In the end I bought locally.

The import value was based on purchase price plus delivery costs if bought within 12 months before arrival. If ownership was over 12 months, the market value was used. You can engage selected valuers and customs will normally accept their figures.

There was a long thread on this subject at the time, and all the other likely costs were detailed.

Well used. If it takes more than 12 months to get to Oz you will need to have a valuation done by a reputable surveyor,it's amazing how bad the boats are after a couple of years cruising sails are stuffed engines are stuffed upholstery is stuffed hull damage to be repaired. Done right a 200k boat might make 100k valuation. Oh throw some mils steel washers in the bilge and poor old sump oil over and around the motor.

Unzud last year on temporary import stuff...they put a value in case you overstay...

Me.. '50k'
Them.. 'last time here in 2003 you said was worth $120k'
Me.. 'that was then... its kanackered... needs fixing'.
Them ' what will it be worth when fixed?'
Me.. 'Dunno..'
Them ' 120k...sign here'.

First part of registration was quick and painless

Filled in the forms and collated the supporting documentation and then phoned AMSA. The guy I spoke to got me to scan it all in and email it to him. Within a could of hours he replied pointing out a couple of things I missed. Updated the documents and posted them. About 3 business days later I received an email approving the boat name and with the marking note document attached.

You also have to watch out for AQIS as unless the boat has been cleared it can't be imported. They have a list of all countries that contain nasty bugs that are forbidden in Australia - and just about every place between Florida and Australia is on the list. They check for things like termites and if they find unidentified droppings or boring residue then you may have to pay for an entomologist and a bug sniffer dog.
You then may have to pay for fumigation.

How tall are the lettering for the ON & LOA have you used? The "wherever possible not less than 100mm" is a bit extreme.

Been playing with photoshop and even 50mm letters is a bit much
