I think its time cruisers crossing oceans changed their outlook...
Give up the 'I've all base's covered' attitude and adopt a 'Everythings going to get pear shaped and HTF will I survive' attitude..
Hand steering for over a 1000 miles is just a matter of getting your head around it.. steer dawn till dusk then heave to/forereach on the most favourable tack and get your head down.. (Screw the look out ****..).
If you cannot deal with a boat down to the absolute basic's... don't go out there... else you'll be just another statistic to blame for rising taxes..

I have to agree with Boaty and I disagree with Dave on the quality of many of the new generation sailors. No question that technology has made offshore sailing much easier than in the past but there is this thing called "tenacity" and some people have it and others don't but its a very important ingredient in the mindset of a good offshore sailor. No amount of technology will help you if you just give up with the **** hits the fan.

I have been clued up on all of this, both here, on blogs and in the press.
I don't really give much thought to a conspiracy but I must say that as this story ages and more people are able to digest some of Eric's decisions he is loosing support from this forums members more and more each day. No doubt that here on CF he has some of the most biased personalities holding true to his side.
But if you review his decisions giving his lack of experience he had NO business being out there being responsible for others lives.
Try to look at the story without defending opinions about ages of children or whatever and never mind about what we don't know from Eric because what we do know is overwhelming that he was overconfident and inexperienced.
Several months ago or more I remember Eric blasting about another cruiser for making bad decisions whilst "out there".
Also I'd like to remind newbies here on this forum to not assume 6,000 posts means you are an old salt.
I must admit that I believe that Eric was too much of an armchair cruiser.

It's not an "us vs. them" and nobody should be taking sides, either side. Instead, why not try to understand just what went wrong and then try to not repeat it. But that can't be done as long as everyone is chanting in unison that Rebel Heart did everything right. They didn't.

I strongly believe that if they perceived that their baby was seriously sick and wasn't getting better, they did the right thing by calling for help. I don't understand why Eric would get off a perfectly good, or certainly good enough, boat rather than sailing it to a Pacific Island, especially in view of the comments he'd been making on CF for the last few years. But I trust that he had his reasons and to him they were valid reasons for getting off. Even if the reason was largely emotional, since the rescuers were there for his daughter anyway, I can't say he did the wrong thing, as a father and husband, by getting off when he had the chance. But at the same time, I can't say that's the sort of sailor that I'd recommend that others emulate.

I think that he's probably a competent sailor but it's already pretty clear that he made many mistakes, from setting out with a crew that wasn't even close to prepared, let alone assist in sailing, so they became a MAJOR distraction to the one real sailor onboard, to choosing to not replace his fuel tanks before setting out, to his choice of routing and approach to beating vs reaching until the crew became more hardened.

Atoll was the first to step up and offer to actually provide some meaningful assistance to Rebel Heart so I don't think anyone on here is qualified to suggest that he is on the wrong "side" or "the dark side." He's obviously the sort of person who is willing to go out of his way to help a fellow sailor in trouble just because it's the right thing to do, and he's willing to do it whether the sailor got into trouble via their own errors or someone else's error or just bad luck. But that doesn't mean he has to like or admire or approve of all the actions of all those he is willing to help out.

Why would anyone think that if RH posted you would get the truth? Peoples idea of the truth in situations like this can really vary a great deal. My personal experience is that people in this situation tend to embellish the truth without even trying as they have gone over their story so many times in their mind that the final rendition tends to be self protecting.
